LOOK: The Davao City Council has approved the Electric Vehicle Ordinance aimed at promoting the use of electric vehicles in the city.

According to Temujin Ocampo, chairperson of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, the ordinance grants incentives to companies, dealers, suppliers, charging stations, battery disposal and recycling facilities, as well as electric vehicle users.

Ocampo said the incentives include tax holidays, procurement support, and exemptions from fees for Mayor’s permits, licenses, rent, and other charges.

Electric vehicle users will also receive discounts ranging from 15% to 30% on renewal, registration, and inspection fees, along with free parking in local government-operated areas.

The ordinance also creates an Electric Vehicle Monitoring Committee to ensure the proper implementation of the measure, which is being described as the first EV ordinance in the country.

Meanwhile, three to four companies have already expressed interest in investing in the construction of charging stations in Davao City.

According to Ocampo, one company plans to install around 100 charging stations across the city. However, the company’s charging facilities are currently limited to its own electric vehicles while awaiting the approval of a Department of Energy circular that would allow all EV users in the city to access the stations.

Maligaya Taxi is also conducting project mapping for the installation of public charging stations in the city, with one planned site located in Lizada, Toril.

Several other companies are likewise preparing to establish charging stations in Davao City, including BYD, which recently expanded its presence in the area.
