Solemn Procession of the beloved Patroness of Loon, the Birhen sa Kasilak, held on September 7, 2024.

From Loon, Bohol, the cradle and source of this cherished Marian devotion, the veneration of the Birhen sa Kasilak has spread like wildfire across the seas, reaching neighboring provinces throughout the Visayas and Mindanao. What began as a deeply rooted devotion in Loon has grown into a wider expression of faith, drawing countless devotees who continue to seek the maternal protection and intercession of Our Lady of Light.

VIRGEN DE LA ASUNCION
Patroness of Dauis (Bohol)

The 4-feet detallado image of the Virgen de la Asuncion that is currently enthroned in a templete-style retablo inside Dauis Church has always been known to be miraculous and wrought several wonders among her devotees.

Here are some of the wonders and miracles of the Virgen de la Asuncion Dauisanon:

It is reported that in the 1800s, the Virgen de la Asuncion cried a lot. Devotees would see her face in the morning, full of tears, which they would gently wipe away with pieces of cloth. They would keep these clothing in the back of the retablo. The townspeople refused to throw away these holy rags, thus there was eventually a large mound of them.

The Virgen de la Asuncion loved wandering about. This is clear from the amorseco seeds that have adhered to her garment on numerous occasions. A storeowner reported that she was frequently visited by a lady who would purchase items from her store. When the storeowner asked what she planned to do with her purchases, the lady replied that she would give them to some of the town's poorest families.

The well below the church altar is considered miraculous, and people draw its water and drink it as a form of connecting themselves to the Patrona, an expression of loving faith in her continuous protection and beneficence. During the dry spell in the 1980s, all the wells in Dauis dried up except one - the miraculous well of the Virgen de la Asuncion. When her devotees came to her well inside Dauis church, they found that it was still bubbling with sweet potable water. The water in the well inside Dauis Church has remained fresh and potable despite its nearness from the shoreline. Also in 2009, a group of chemists analyzed the water from Our Lady's well and discovered that it was free of contaminants and heavy minerals, demonstrating its potability and purity.

In the 19th century, a group of fishermen from Argao (Cebu) were preparing to board their bancas to set sail for the town of Dauis. Suddenly a lady came to them and asked to ride with them. The lady looked pregnant so the fishermen hesitated. Also, their banca was already heavily laden with goods and supplies. But this lady pleaded that she be allowed to sail with them. When asked why she desperately wanted to take the trip, she simply responded, "Because I wanted to be near my husband." Finally, the fishermen relented and they sailed for Dauis with the mysterious lady on board. When the group reached Dauis, they disembarked in that part of the beach fronting the old town plaza where even today stands two date palm trees. After disembarking, the Argao fishermen forgot about their mysterious passenger as they went about their business in town. But later in the afternoon, the fishermen dropped inside the old church of Dauis to pray, and there on the altar they saw the image of Our Lady of the Assumption and recognized it was the same lady who rode with them from Argao. And then it dawned to them why the lady said she wanted to be near her husband for right across the strait from Dauis, in the adjacent city of Tagbilaran, stands the church of St. Joseph, the spouse and protector of Our Lady. This miracle is foretold in the Dauis gozos sung during the January Feast of Miracles.

In 1997 during the tri-centennial anniversary of the Founding of Dauis, the town organized a reenactment of the legendary arrival of the Argao fishermen in Dauis. One eyewitness said that while they were waiting for the boat carrying the image of Our Lady of the Assumption, the sky suddenly turned dark, and by the time the decorated boat was seen approaching that part of the strait, a real storm had broken out. Through the rain and wind, the boat sailed on until it reached the pier when suddenly, the storm stopped and as the dark clouds parted, a ray of sunlight shone down through the cloudburst, touching the boat where the image of Our Lady was standing serenely. The crowd then broke out in cries and wild clapping.

"Memorable as well was the miracle
On the thirty first of August, a Saturday
In the year nineteen hundred twenty eight
You beckoned the children
With your hands you indicated
So they would come before you", thus wrote another verse of the Gozos to the Virgen de la Asuncion Dauisanon. Three girls were playing near the church saw the Lady at the altar beckoning them to come near her. The children said that Our Lady entrusted them with a horrible secret that they cried and cried afterwards.

Even the two date palm trees (locally called Mariveles) standing at the supposed disembarkation place of the mysterious lady from Argao takes on a reputation for marvel. Old people of the town swear these trees have always been there, but who planted these Middle Eastern trees in Dauis? If one stands between these two date palm trees and walk about a hundred paces north, one finds himself inside the church and beside the fresh water well below the altar.
