OCTOBER 12 | FEAST OF OUR LADY OF THE PILLAR OF ZARAGOZA

The Feast of Our Lady of the Pillar (Nuestra Seรฑora del Pilar) is celebrated annually on October 12th and is one of Spain's most important festivals. The celebration, known as the Fiestas del Pilar, takes place primarily in the city of Zaragoza, Spain, where the Basilica-Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pillar is located.

โ€‹Historical Significance of the Apparition:

โ€‹The devotion to Our Lady of the Pillar is rooted in a tradition that is considered the first Marian apparition in the history of the Church, and is unique because it is believed to have occurred while the Virgin Mary was still alive on Earth.

โ€‹The Apparition: Tradition holds that on January 2, 40 A.D., the Apostle Saint James the Greater was in Caesaraugusta (now Zaragoza), discouraged by the slow progress of his evangelization efforts in Roman Spain. While praying by the banks of the Ebro River, the Virgin Mary miraculously appeared to him on a pillar of jasper, accompanied by angels. This phenomenon is often described as an act of bilocation, as Mary was believed to still be living in Jerusalem at the time.

โ€‹The Command: Mary asked Saint James to build a church on that very spot, promising that "it will stand from that moment until the end of time" and that the pillar would remain as a symbol of the strength of the faith.

โ€‹The Pillar and Statue: The small wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, which depicts her with the Child Jesus, rests atop the sacred jasper pillar inside the Basilica. The church built on this site is believed to be the first church in history dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

โ€‹Patronage: Our Lady of the Pillar is the Patron Saint of Zaragoza, the Spanish Civil Guard, and all Hispanic peoples (Hispanidad). The feast day, October 12th, also coincides with Spain's National Holiday (Dรญa de la Hispanidad), as it is the date Christopher Columbus first sighted land in the Americas in 1492. In the Philippines, the Virgen del Pilar is a popular Marian devotion with so many towns, provinces and parishes adhering to her patronage.

The Grand Marian Shrine of Nuestra Seรฑora de Guadalupe de Extremadura, also known as the Parish of Saint Peter the Apostle in Loboc, Bohol, enshrines the only venerated image of Our Lady of Guadalupe de Extremadura from Spain, a sacred treasure that has been revered since the 19th century.
