What Went Right Last School Year: Part 3
Listening to My Mentors
Sa totoo lang, I’m very proud and grateful to say na napunta ako sa leaders who truly know how to lead and more importantly, leaders who genuinely want to see us grow.
For the past 6 years, there’s one thing I consistently did right: I chose to listen to my mentors.
Not just to hear but to reflect, apply, and improve myself and my teaching.
There were times na mahirap tanggapin yung feedback, times na kailangan mag-adjust, and times na mapapaisip ka kung kaya mo pa bang mag-improve. But I trusted the process.
And recently, hearing them say na parang mas magaling na daw ako sa kanila, it’s humbling. But honestly, I don’t see it that way.
I am their legacy.
I am who I am today because of my mentors—Sir Ryan and Sir Earl.
And this is why it worked:
1. It taught me humility. Listening means accepting that there is always room for improvement, no matter how long you’ve been teaching.
2. It strengthened my teaching practice. Their guidance helped me refine my strategies, classroom management, and decision-making.
3. It gave me direction. Hindi ako naliligaw because I have experienced mentors guiding me along the way.
4. It built discipline and consistency. Growth didn’t happen overnight, but because I kept applying what I learned from them.
5. It created a ripple effect. As I grow, my students benefit the most, through better teaching, better guidance, and better learning experiences.
6. It reminded me that teaching is never a solo journey. We grow because someone guided us, believed in us, and invested their time in us.
Looking back, one of the best things we can do as teachers is to stay teachable.
To my fellow educators, if you are blessed with mentors, listen to them, learn from them, and value them. One day, you’ll realize… you are not just improving, you are continuing their legacy. 💙
