And now, his name takes center stage as we open the PCAP Wesley So Cup 2026 this September 26, 2026!

THE STORY OF World no. 9, GM WESLEY SO
Wesley So is a Filipino-American chess grandmaster who has been one of the world's top-ranked chess players since 2014. Here's his story:
Wesley So was born on October 9, 1993, in Bacoor, Cavite, Philippines. He learned to play chess at the age of 6 and quickly demonstrated a natural talent for the game.
So's rise to prominence in the chess world began in the early 2000s. He won several local and national tournaments in the Philippines, including the Philippine Chess Championship.
In 2008, So became a grandmaster at the age of 14 years and 1 month, making him the youngest Filipino grandmaster in history.
In 2014, So switched his chess federation from the Philippines to the United States. He has since become one of the top-ranked chess players in the world.
So has won numerous international tournaments, including the 2016 Grand Chess Tour, the 2017 Tata Steel Masters, and the 2019 FIDE World Fischer Random Chess Championship.
So is known for his positional playing style and his exceptional endgame skills. He has been a trailblazer for chess in the Philippines and the United States, and has inspired a new generation of chess players around the world.

Boxing champion and Philippine sports icon Manny Pacquiao has drawn attention after reportedly declining a position connected to Philippine chess.

Known to many Filipinos for his achievements in boxing, as well as his public image of integrity, character, and sportsmanship, Pacquiao’s decision can be viewed as a reminder that positions and titles are not always more important than principles.

In sports, true leadership is not measured only by medals, victories, or official positions. Sometimes, it is demonstrated by having the courage to make a difficult decision when circumstances challenge one’s values.

As the saying goes:

“I’d rather burn the bridge if the bridge will light the way.”
