Happy New Year’s Eve, Lasallians!

As the year comes to a close, let us remember to be thankful for everything that has happened. To others, it may have been their best year yet. To some, maybe not. We all have experienced our highs and lows. There might have been moments where you would feel like giving up, and yet, you are still here, about to celebrate the coming of a new year—a new change.

Being here and remaining means that you grew, you learned, you changed. It is proof that even the smallest changes can make the biggest difference. Yes, you made mistakes, you had regrets, you had doubts, but you are still here, and that will always be the most important thing. Let us also remember and cherish the moments we’ve had with our family and friends. The moments where you wake up to your mom cooking your favorite meal, or those small moments where you were laughing with your closest friends. The people who stayed by your side, the people who left—all these experiences shaped you into the person you are now.

As we say goodbye to 2025 and welcome 2026, let us not forget and be thankful for what this year gave us. Remember to be kind; not only to others but also to yourself. Share that kindness other and it will come back to you.

Today, December 30, we commemorate Rizal Day, a national observance that honors the life, ideals, and enduring influence of Dr. José Rizal, the Philippines’ national hero. First marked in 1898, this day remembers a man whose courage and intellect helped awaken a nation during one of its darkest periods.

Through his novels Noli Me Tangere published in 1887 and El Filibusterismo in 1891, Rizal boldly revealed the abuses of Spanish rule and gave voice to the growing call for reform. Beyond his novels, his essays, poems, and plays such as Sa Mga Kababaihang Taga Malolos, A La Juventud Filipina, and El Consejo de los Dioses reflected his deep love for the country and his hope for an enlightened Filipino society.

In 1892, Rizal founded La Liga Filipina, a civic organization that sought peaceful reforms. Soon after, he was arrested and exiled to Dapitan, where he continued to serve the people by teaching, treating the sick, and contributing to science and community life, proving that patriotism lives not only in words but in action.

Despite advocating nonviolence, Rizal was accused of inciting rebellion. After a brief and unjust trial, he was sentenced to death. On the morning of December 30, 1896, at Luneta in Manila, the 35 year old hero was executed by firing squad, sealing his place in history as a martyr for freedom.

Rizal’s writings ignited awareness and inspired generations to question oppression and value education as a tool for change. His legacy reminds us that ideas can shape a nation, and that the courage to speak truth can move people toward freedom.

As we honor Rizal today, his life and works remain deeply relevant in our present time. An era where civic responsibility, truth, and freedom of expression continue to be tested, Rizal reminds us to stay informed, speak with integrity, and act for the common good. His courage urges Filipinos today to take part in shaping a just and compassionate society.
