Regional Aedes-Borne Disease Advocacy Conducted at Fort Pikit Elementary School

Pikit, Cotabato – September 1, 2025. The fight against mosquito-borne diseases gained stronger ground as Fort Pikit Elementary School became the venue for the Regional Aedes-Borne Disease Advocacy Activities, a health campaign dedicated to safeguarding communities from the threats of dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika virus.

The initiative, spearheaded by Ministry of Health representatives Ms. Kaye Camping and Ms. Norbailah Tamayo, RN, was carried out with the invaluable support of SGA nurses led by Diana Djhoanna Nor, RN, alongside Sheryna Mamalangkap, RN, Abdulbasser Mamaluba, RN, Michael Jake Pendatun, RN, and Zairen Gay Kudto. Their presence underscored the shared commitment of health workers to protect families and children from illnesses carried by the Aedes mosquito.

Also gracing the event were education cluster heads: Dr. Nasrudin Pandulo (Malidegao 1), Rayhana Pendi Ali (Malidegao 2), and Longlong Afdal (Tugunan Cluster). Their participation highlighted the importance of bridging health and education in sustaining advocacy efforts at the grassroots level.

The campaign emphasized three core objectives: raising awareness of the dangers of Aedes-borne diseases, promoting vector control to reduce mosquito breeding, and engaging communities especially schools, parents, and leaders in long-term preventive actions.

Among the highlighted strategies were the 4S Strategy, Search and Destroy mosquito breeding sites; Secure protection from bites; Seek early medical consultation; and Support community-wide prevention and the “Alas Kwatro Kontra Dengue” movement, a daily 4:00 PM clean-up drive timed during peak mosquito activity. These practical measures reminded everyone that disease prevention starts at home and within the community.

The program placed strong emphasis on eliminating breeding sites by clearing stagnant water and maintaining clean surroundings. Beyond lectures, the advocacy fostered dialogue, encouraging families, teachers, and students to take ownership of their role in keeping the community safe.

“This is not just about health education; it’s about protecting lives,” one of the health advocates stressed, capturing the spirit of collective responsibility.

By the end of the day, the event was more than just an advocacy campaign, it became a call for unity. With the Ministry of Health, dedicated nurses, school officials, and the local community working hand in hand, the advocacy showcased how collaboration can save lives and ensure healthier, safer communities for the Bangsamoro region.
