I've only had the Anbernic RG406V in the transparent black version, and I still think it's the better colorway amongst the others. But now that I have the retro gray Super Famicom version, it gives off that nostalgia vibes more. Not bad. 😊

Demo play of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Retroid Pocket 5! The recent update of the game made it run on 64-bit, therefore shifting it from JIT to NCE and greatly improving performance. Now it runs at a stable 60FPS! Here are the specs on how it was ran:

Hardware: Retroid Pocket 5
OS: Stock
Emulator: Citron 0.6.1
Video Driver: Stock (Qualcomm)
Resolution: 1x Handheld (720p)
Game version: 3.0.4 with Booster Course DLC

Somehow it crashes when custom Turnip drivers are being used, but since it runs natively at 60FPS, I don't mind it.

P.S. Sorry I recorded the video in 30FPS (forgot to switch) but it's smooth IRL. There's an FPS counter on the upper left that shows it runs at 60FPS.

Somehow, I ended up with two of these. 😂

Great mid-range units that can run select Switch games at full speed, plus the full suite of PS2, Gamecube, Wii, and retro games, plus all Android games as well (imagine playing Genshin/MLBB with built-in joysticks).

The kicker: it has an amazing 1080p AMOLED screen!

The Retroid Pocket 5 for me is the best bang-for-the-buck gaming handheld currently in the market.

What I like about EmulationStation, whether it's ES-DE or the Linux variant, is that it more or less feels the same, and you can have the same themes cross OS. Above is the Anbernic RG Cube with Android/ES-DE installed, below is the RG CubeXX with Knulli/EmulationStation installed, both with the Canvas theme. Whether you bring one or the other, you won't really get confused on the interface.

You would need to reflash your SD card for this update to work though. So as a best practice, it would be good to use a smaller microSD card for the OS and use a bigger one for the ROMs so that on future updates, it will be less complicated.

AN ALL WHITE ANBERNIC AFFAIR

In picture: The Anbernic RG406H on top, RG Cube on the lower left, and the RG CubeXX on the lower right. It's a nice coincidence that I have these 3 all at the same point in time, and all in their white colorways.

All of them have their pros and cons in relation to each other, at least from my perspective.

RG406H:
✅ Taller, hall-sensor joysticks are much nicer to use, caps are user-replaceable too
✅ Great for 4:3 systems (Sega, PS, PS2, GC), and versatile enough for widescreen games
❌ Black bezels are a bit annoying since it makes the screen look smaller

RG Cube:
✅ 1:1 screen ratio makes it very nice to use for GB/GBC at 10:9 aspect, and NES/SNES at 8:7 aspect, and vertical arcade shoot-em-up games.
❌ Widescreen aspects tend to look very small (GBA, PSP, some Wii)

RG CubeXX:
✅ Most affordable among the 3 models here
✅ Same with the RG Cube that can take advantage of a 1:1 aspect ratio
❌ Less powerful than the others (up to PS1 only with a few PSP games, but again, small widescreen)

Finally had the chance to properly configure the Anbernic RG Cube today. Updated the device to fix the cardinal snapping issue of the analog sticks, and also made modifications on the frontend. Usually I use the Iconic theme on the ES-DE frontend, but it doesn't quite fit the 1:1 screen ratio for me. So I went with the Canvass theme instead with the Grid/Carousel/Marquee variant, which I think is awesome with the retro color scheme of both the hardware and the wallpaper.

Retro handhelds are dime-a-dozen in the market right now. If you have one, you can maximize your device's potential not only by its performance, but also through software aesthetics.
