Making mistakes doesn’t define you; your next action will.

Owning one's actions, like raising one's hand during class, might seem simple. However, accountability goes a long way beyond that.
The courage it took to embrace the steps you made, the footprints it set, and the paths it unfolded.
To swallow the fear from criticism and to walk straight after being struck by a hundred scornful gazes.

It was never easy,
Yet you did; if you haven’t, then you will.

Well, what now?
What happens after you hold yourself accountable?

You must continue walking on the same path that those disdainful gazes fall upon.
The same path that had fear swallowed you whole.
Look back at the rock you had stumbled upon, and
the puddles of mud that stained you.
Learn, that the moment you continue on your journey, you may never stumble on another rock nor trip and fall into mud again.
But do not mistake it for being foolish— one who blunders night and day, and yet has never learned.

Mistakes are inevitable; embrace them.
Life is not a pursuit of perfection, but the pursuit of integrity.
You make mistakes not because you failed,
but because you are trying to learn.

FEATURE | IBALONG: A CELEBRATION OF THE BICOLANO CULTURE AND IDENTITY
by Jennelle Mary-Isabelle Tyler

The Ibalong festival, held annually in August, sets itself apart from other festivals celebrated in the Philippines. Unlike other fiestas which celebrate patron saints, this unique and non-religious festival pays tribute to the legendary heroes Baltog, Handyong, and Bantong — who are figures from the ancient Ibalong epic that continue to inspire the Bicolanos’ sense of pride and identity.

While this unique festival is rooted in age-old folklore, it transforms the legend into a spectacle with vibrant street dances, unique costumes, and dramatic performances that bring the epic to life. While street dances and performances often steal the spotlight, the festival also features a variety of exciting events.

The festival goes beyond celebrating epic heroes, but it’s also a showcase of the Bicolano culture. At its heart, the celebration honors the region’s historical and mythological heritage before the arrival of the Spaniards. Tourists from outside the Bicol region can become immersed in the culture during this festival. Many major activities are held in the Ibalong Center located at Sawangan Park, Legazpi City Boulevard, and in the city streets as well.

The festival is more than just colorful costumes and street dances — it invites both tourists and even locals to take part in a wide array of activities and even enjoy the events, which makes the experience memorable for all. For athletes or casual runners alike, the Mayon Trail Run offers an exciting challenge. Its route is designed to let them experience the scenic landscape of the city including the popular Mt. Mayon, making this the highlight of the activity.

Meanwhile, pageant enthusiasts can look forward to one of the festival’s most-awaited highlights — the Mutya ng Ibalong. Pageants are one of the most common, yet highly anticipated events during festivals. More than just a showcase of beauty and brains, the competition also supports meaningful advocacies by supporting charities and social causes.

As the two-week celebration comes to an end, the streets burst with energy through vibrant dances and theatrical performances that bring legends and traditions back to life. This year, the festival ended with a concert by popular guest artists, leaving the crowd with a memorable Ibalong Festival experience.

The Ibalong Festival offers visitors a glimpse into Bicolano culture — blending myth, history, and community spirit in a colorful celebration. While tourists are treated to a one-of-a-kind cultural experience, locals take pride, reliving the stories and traditions that define their identity. Beyond the food, music, and colorful decorations, the festival is a tribute to history, a reminder of how culture, epics, and community have shaped Bicol’s heritage.

An Open Letter to Anyone Struggling with Suicidal Thoughts

Trigger Warning: Mentions of Su***de

Hi there!

It's been a while. How are you? You may be reading this purely out of coincidence. Perhaps you’ve been searching for a sign, a reason to hold on. Either way, I want you to pause for a moment and let me tell you that I’m glad you’re here. Maybe you don’t hear that enough, or maybe you don’t believe it right now, but your presence in this world matters more than you realize.

I know life can feel unbearably heavy. Sometimes the pain feels like it’s too much for one heart to carry. Days when you think that you’ve had everything planned, and the next thing you know, you’re faced with an obstacle that makes moving forward impossible. You might feel invisible and misunderstood, like no one would notice if you disappeared. When these thoughts start filling your head, it’s easy to believe them. But hear me when I say: they are not the truth.

You are not invisible. You are not replaceable. You are not a mistake.

I see you. I see your struggles. The pain and burden that you are carrying. I see the battles that you fight inside your mind, the loneliness that drains you both mentally and physically. Everything that you feel right now is real and valid.

If your mind is telling you that no one would care if you disappeared, that’s the pain speaking, not reality. People would care, some already do. There are friendships waiting for you, places you haven’t seen yet, and things that you haven’t tried. Your story isn’t finished – even if it feels like the ending is the only thing in sight.

I won’t pretend that everything will magically get better overnight. Healing takes time, may it be days, weeks, months, or even years. It’s a step-by-step process that is uniquely yours and accommodates your well-being. Please give life a chance to show you its softer sides again even with all its imperfections. The pain you feel now doesn’t mean you will never experience peace and joy in your future.

You don’t have to keep pretending that everything is alright. You don’t have to keep smiling and laughing while you are hurting inside. Reaching out is easier said than done. Sometimes, your voice trembles or gets stuck in your throat. You don’t want to burden people with what you’re feeling, but let me gently remind you that you are not alone in this. Tell a friend, a family member, a counselor, or even a stranger on a helpline. Speak your truth. Pour out your feelings. Cry or shout. Let someone sit beside you in your pain. You deserve comfort, love, and understanding.

If all you can do today is breathe, that’s okay. If all you can do tomorrow is get out of bed, that’s enough. Surviving is not weakness – it's courage. It’s choosing to stay even when it hurts, and that is something profoundly strong and courageous. I’ll be with you in your journey to healing.

So please, hold on. Hold on for even one more day, one more moment. The sunrise tomorrow will come and with it, another chance for you. A chance to rediscover joy, to find connection, and to heal at your own pace.

The world is a better place with you in it. Your story is not over yet and I, a stranger, believe in you and I am rooting for you to stay.

With love,

Someone who cares

LIFESTYLE WEDNESDAY | ALIVE INTERNET THEORY
by himpapawid

Dead Internet Theory: It is the conspiracy theory that the majority of activity online consists mostly of bots, AI, and algorithms rather than actual people.

Recently, I have seen this term popping up in my feed more frequently. I had heard of this theory since before it became as well-known as it is now, and I thought it was absurd. Up to that point, I had been knee-deep into the internet and had been part of several communities where I had made friends and acquaintances alike. The connections and experiences we had, there was no way a robot could ever replace that.

Fast forward to the present day, and going on my phone is one of the worst experiences of my entire life. That silly conspiracy theory back then has become a strongly held belief to many users online — and who could blame them? AI content generation has become not only more realistic, but also widely available to the public. Every social media site you’re on, every ad or video you watch, and even the people you meet online are all handed to you by an algorithm that knows you better than yourself. Every post you see online, every image, every comment, every person — how do you know for sure that the people you’re interacting with are even real?

Ever since you stepped foot onto the internet, whether you were aware of it or not, your data has been tracked. Every link you’ve ever clicked, or any question you’ve asked Google, has been stored and bought by companies that use it to help themselves advertise to you. The internet is a vast sea of knowledge, one that you walk away from knowing more than when you first arrived. But every time you walk away from it, you walk away a little bit more mean, a tiny bit more cynical, and a little angrier; and they walk away with a little more of you.

What the algorithm feeds you, is what it knows you will watch. It doesn’t need you to feel anything, it just needs you to engage with the content it serves you. It echoes back to you, your beliefs and ideas, because it knows that it is what you wanted to see. So you see these posts and you see these videos about how everything is horrible and it's only going to get worse — so you carry that mindset with you; and you keep going, you keep seeing the world’s worst. There are less and less people in these posts, with the few people there just as angry as you.

Since it works, the algorithm does it all over again. The content you’re being served has been edited, cut, recycled, repackaged, and reposted for you to watch for the hundredth time. The video loops over and over until you swipe down and see another one just like it. Whatever soul was put into it has been ripped out, stretched apart, and put back in misshapen. Nothing on here is human anymore, it has been replaced with machines, robots, and AI — just like you knew it would.

Your phone runs out of battery, and you catch a glimpse of your face in the reflection and feel a sense of realization. How long has it been? It’s already lunch and you haven’t even gotten up yet. How has something that was meant to connect you more with the world turned into something that took it away from you? And how could you let it? Since when did you let the algorithm take the wheel for you? How many hobbies did you want to pursue but didn’t because you were too busy? How many hours have you wasted waiting for the opportunity to just have a little more time? Living life shouldn’t look like this, and you know it; but what else are you supposed to do?

You wrestle the wheel back, you fight for your autonomy. The internet is full of AI slop, ragebait, and doomscrolling has never been easier. But in that pile, is a diamond in the rough. There are still people out there who put their heart and soul into what they create. They make it to inspire, to motivate, to give you hope. There are people, real people, who need your help in situations where only you, a person, can make a difference. You need to make that decision, to break from that cycle. Watch something that you wouldn’t usually watch, talk to someone you wouldn’t normally talk to, see something that breaks how you see everything else. There are so many people with different stories of optimism and hope just waiting for you to listen — all you need is to choose to.

“51% of the internet is bots... but 100% of You is human.” - Campbell Walker

The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Guinobatan and the Provincial Government of Albay commemorated the 160th birth anniversary of General Simeon A. Ola, the last Filipino general to surrender to the Americans during the end of the Philippine-American War on September 02, 2025, at the Ola National Shrine, Guinobatan, Albay.

The LGU of Guinobatan led a ceremony that included a commemorative Eucharistic Mass at the Our Lady of Assumption Parish, followed by the raising of the Philippine Flag with a 21-gun salute to honor Ola’s bravery. Government officials, military and police personnel, and other stakeholders laid bouquets of flowers at the monument.

A military parade was also held, featuring the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine Navy, Philippine Air Force (PAF), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office - Guinobatan (MDRRMO).

Several marching bands from Albay participated in the parade.

During the brief interaction with local media and school publications, Municipal Mayor Ann Gemma Y. Ongjoco highlighted the importance of recognizing the heroism of Guinobatan’s native son.

“Ito po kumbaga simbolo ng heroism, so pinapaalala natin–lalo na po yung younger generation na meron tayong isang hero na kailangan marecognize,” she expressed.

“The last Filipino general to surrender during the American times, malaking honra—honor and pride na ang last Filipino general to surrender during the American war is from Guinobatan,” she added.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Arthur C. Tagtag Jr., Chief of Police of Guinobatan, also shared in an interview, “Itong ginagawa natin na pag-celebrate sa kaniyang birthday, yearly itong ginagawa natin buong Albay ‘to, ‘yon na ‘yung way of giving thanks to him kahit wala na siya.”

“Tapos bilang Guinobateño, ako bilang chief of police ninyo [in Guinobatan] dapat ipakita din natin ang disiplina natin sa—hindi lang sa isip sa gawa at saka sa ibang bagay pa na pwede nating maging disiplinado tayo. Sundan natin heroic hero here in Guinobatan so andoon yung pagmamahal niya sa bayan,” Tagtag said.

General Ola is known as the last Filipino general to surrender to the enemy during the American occupation of the Philippines. He surrendered on September 25, 1903, along with 28 of his men and officers, on the condition that they be granted amnesty. Ola faced trial that year and was sentenced to 30 years of imprisonment but was pardoned in 1904.

Meanwhile, Mayor Ongjoco expressed her gratitude to everyone who participated in the celebration, “Thank you very much po sa lahat ng nag witness and nakisama right from the start—from the mass to the simple celebration. Thank you very much for witnessing [and] joining us in this simple celebration,” Ongjoco said.
