IN PHOTOS: The friendliest festival in the Philippines is in full swing, as the City Government of Cagayan de Oro launched its month-long festivities on August 8 at the Rio de Oro Boulevard.

This year, the Higalaay Festival stands as part of the city’s 75th Diamond Jubilee, with the theme “Proud of our Roots, Bold in our Dreams.” The opening day commenced with a eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr. Raul Ricacho SSJV, followed by a grand fireworks display and several guest performances from local and Mindanao-based artists, drawing over a thousand attendees.

In his opening address, Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy encouraged citizens to remain steadfast in their shared hopes and visions for the city’s future. “Padayon kita sa atong mga pangandoy—pangandoy sa usa ka masmalinawon, malangkubon, ug malamboon nga Dakbayan sa Cagayan de Oro.”

Acting Tourism Officer Mark Jalapadan shared prior to the launch that a total of 58 activities are scheduled for this year’s festival, spanning the entire month of August. These range from sports competitions, pageantry and fashion showcases, cultural and musical presentations, community fairs to wellness activities, culminating with the Feast of Sr. San Agustin, and more—all curated to reflect the identity of the Kagay-anon people.

Kagay-anons and tourists alike are invited to participate in the festivities and celebrate the rich culture, history, and spirit of camaraderie that define Cagayan de Oro.

Once a noble knight, he was struck down by a cannonball in the Battle of Pamplona, his body wounded and pride in ruins. Yet in the stillness of his pain, grace found him. What seemed like defeat became divine redirection. From the ruins of his old dreams rose a new calling: to become a knight for God.

Today, we commemorate the Feast day of St. Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the Society of Jesus (SJ) in 1540.

His journey from worldly valor to spiritual greatness reminds us that failure is not the end—it can be the beginning of something far greater. In our weakest moments, God plants the seeds of purpose. Like him, we are called not to give up, but to rise, for we are destined for a purpose greater than ourselves.

IN PHOTOS: XU officially welcomed 1,649 new students across the various schools and colleges as the annual Orientation Seminar (OrSem) commenced on July 30, carrying the theme: “Just Like That.”

Kicking off on the same week as the Feast of St. Ignatius, the opening day of OrSem set a reflective tone as faculty and staff gathered at Lucas Hall for a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, honoring the founder of the Society of Jesus (SJ) and the enduring values he inspired.

“You come in with the weight of expectations and aspirations of your parents and loved ones,” University President Fr Mars Tan SJ affirmed, sharing to the university's newest additions that their journey begins with the support from their own circles. Even with uncertainties, he assured that the university would offer their assistance. “We present ourselves not because we're officials, but because we're here to help one another reach our goals.”

This year's OrSem also saw the addition of students from the newly-established Accelerated Pathway for Medicine (APMed) under the School of Medicine (SOM); and the Aviation Management under the School of Business and Management (SBM).

Beyond the ceremonies, freshmen also participated in various campus activities, such as the counseling orientation, college assemblies, and small group discussions led by student facilitators and volunteers.

OrSem is slated to run from July 30 to August 2, ushering in a new chapter for the Xavier Ateneo community.

The XU Crusaders concluded their campaign at the National Ultimate Collegiate Championship (NUCC) 2025 with a third place finish, representing the university at the national level last July 19-20 at the CDC Parade Grounds in Clark, Pampanga.

This year’s edition featured 13 participating universities, with the XU Crusaders ranking behind the joint team of UP Diliman and UP Manila in 2nd, and Palawan State University (PSU) defending their spot as the nation’s reigning ultimate champions.

Despite being a less prominently featured sport at the collegiate level, the Crusaders’ feat marked a pivotal step in its growing recognition not only for those interested in the sport, but for the university’s athletics as a whole. “We’re slowly going there na. Number one is gina-allow na nato sila to represent Xavier,” affirmed University Athletics Office (UAO) head Jessica Esparrago, who also shared that their achievement at the national level was a starting point for bringing the university’s name to the forefront of such competitions.

“It means a lot for the team to clinch the 2nd runner up spot after a big setback from last year's standing of 5th place, ” said team captain Hanzen Abellanosa. He likened their experience to David and Goliath, as other competitors hailed from the national team and even competed in the international arena. “Not only were we able to place a podium, we were able to stand up against one of the top universities.”

Looking ahead, the Crusaders aim to carry the momentum forward and pass on their experience to the next generation of players, eyeing a grassroots program to foster competence in the sports. “We would like to share our knowledge and experience para sa future players na gusto din i-represent ang pinaglaban namin.”

Running into its 12th year, the NUCC serves as the premier annual collegiate ultimate tournament in the Philippines, bringing together the top teams from across the country in a celebration of skill, sportsmanship, and camaraderie.

IN PHOTOS: The XU School of Medicine (XUJPRSM) held its graduation rites at the University Gymnasium on July 12, honoring 52 Doctor of Medicine graduates, and graduates from the Master of Science in Health and Hospital Management, and the Health Professions Education programs.

The rites commenced with a baccalaureate mass presided by University President Fr. Mars Tan SJ, concelebrated by Fr. Antonio Moreno SJ and Fr. Ruben Orbeta Jr. SJ.

Following that was the convocation ceremony where Christian Cuerquis, Top of Doctor of Medicine Class 2025 delivered his address on behalf of the graduates. In his speech, Cuerquis expressed his gratitude and reflected on the class’ collective journey in XUJPRSM, highlighting how patient encounters fueled him to continue and persevere.

Afterwards, commencement speaker Dr. David Mendoza MD, PHSAE, imparted a motivational speech, sharing unseen truths and realities of being in the medical field and challenging them to foster a transformative service.

“You are now guardians of the health of the communities of our nation. You have to make sure that no one is left behind,” he encouraged. “Let your heart be guided by purpose. Be leaders in communities, not just in hospitals. Use your voice to advocate for the voiceless.”

Following, Vice President for Higher Education Dr. Juliet Dalagan led the hooding ceremony and presentation of graduates together with Fr. Tan. The awarding of diplomas then took place and followed by the recognition of academic honors and loyalty awardees.

To conclude the ceremony, Fr. Tan conveyed his parting message and led the benediction. “You have been taught not only the science of medicine, but the art of human dignity,” he expressed. “Let your hearts burn with a desire to serve, to uplift, and to be a light in God and for others.”

This culminating stage marks the end of the 86th Commencement Exercises of the University.

XU students John Legaspi (BS BA MM 3) and Jecris Nalual II (BS ME 3) bagged several awards at the Unilever Business Week (UBW) 2025, held under the Unilever Internships Program from June 2-6 at Taguig City.

Legaspi clinched first place in both the Marketing Case and Human Resources Case, and placed second in the UniOps Case, making his team the Overall Champion. Meanwhile, Nalual secured first place in the UniOps Case and second place in both the Supply Chain Case and the Unilever Food Solutions Challenge, earning his team the title of Overall First Runner-up.

Reflecting on the experience, Legaspi highlighted the importance of curiosity, collaboration, and humility. “Everyone has something valuable to share, and we can learn from anyone, just as we can also teach others,” he said. Legaspi also emphasized the value of leadership and community: “Becoming a good leader doesn't happen alone; it takes a network or a ‘village’ to support, guide, and grow with you.”

For Nalual, stepping out of his comfort zone as a mechanical engineering student was both challenging and rewarding. “Dealing with business cases and being surrounded by people from different backgrounds who had so much more experience in these types of things,” he admitted. “Instead of feeling intimidated, I took it as a chance to learn from them. I absorbed everything I could, asked questions here and there, and contributed whenever and wherever I could.” Nalual went on to share how this mindset taught him adaptability, openness, and a drive for continuous learning.

Both of them expressed their commitment to carrying these lessons forward. Legaspi aims to foster continuous learning and mutual support by staying open-minded, encouraging collaboration, and building strong, inclusive connections in both academic and professional settings. Nalual, on the other hand, plans to integrate empathy, communication, and purpose-driven leadership into his engineering career by valuing both technical skills and human connections.

Out of more than 4,000 applicants nationwide, only 35 students were selected, with each guaranteed an internship that provided exposure to Unilever’s various functions. Throughout the week, participants were grouped into cross-disciplinary teams and tasked with solving real-world business cases from various Unilever functions, while also engaging in leadership talks and mentorship from Unilever professionals.

Their achievements reflect not only their personal growth but also the university’s commitment to developing well-rounded, purpose-driven leaders.
