A sky spilling gold across the horizon. The world hurrying beneath it, eyes fixed on what comes next.

Yet life is not waiting at the finish line. It blooms in the light we so often look past, in everyday moments that make up our lifetime.

And perhaps all it takes is a spark against the dusk.

The WORD proudly presents this summerโ€™s ๐‘ด๐’Š๐’„๐’‰๐’†๐’๐’† ๐‘น๐’†๐’๐’๐’Š๐’•๐’‚ ๐‘ณ๐’Š๐’•๐’†๐’“๐’‚๐’“๐’š ๐‘พ๐’“๐’Š๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐‘ช๐’๐’๐’•๐’†๐’”๐’• with the theme ๐‘ด๐’†๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’•๐’ ๐‘ฝ๐’Š๐’—๐’†๐’“๐’† | ๐‘น๐’†๐’Ž๐’†๐’Ž๐’ƒ๐’†๐’“ ๐’•๐’ ๐‘ณ๐’Š๐’—๐’†

Food safety concerns have resurfaced at Holy Name University (HNU) after alleged contamination incidents in the campus food court were shared on the HNU Confessions page, showing a rat sighting and worms found in meals, which raised questions about sanitation and safety in one of the universityโ€™s most frequented spaces.

โ€œI avoided buying sa stalls nga naay mga negative incidents nga nahappen, especially adtong naay ratโ€ฆ I became more cautious on what and where I buy my food,โ€ a student said.

Stall vendors cited environmental factors affecting the area. โ€œAng amoa lang kay di to amoa gikan mismoโ€”sa lugar to... dili malikayan gyud,โ€ one vendor explained.

Providing a scientific perspective, Mr. Jessie Kevin Arcadio, member of the Bohol Food Safety Team, said pest presence in food areas poses serious health risks, particularly in open environments. โ€œPwede gyud makakuha ang consumers ug leptospirosis, salmonella, and hantavirus.โ€

He explained that these diseases may result from contamination through rat urine or contact with unsanitary food preparation surfaces, potentially causing infections and gastrointestinal illnesses.

Mr. Arcadio added that worms or maggots found in food may also indicate bacterial contamination and the possible presence of parasites. โ€œKaning maggots kay gikan ni sa housefly larval nga stage niyaโ€ฆ pwede pud nga kadtong eggs sa fly nag carry pud siya ug parasites.โ€

He further noted that the open structure of the food court allows pests to easily enter, emphasizing the need for structural improvements and stricter pest control. โ€œOpen pud atong area, wala puy mga screenโ€ฆ Dapat naa tay comprehensive pest management program.โ€

University canteen-in-charge and Pollution Control Officer, Mr. Nelson Dela Rama said an investigation was immediately conducted, pointing to the canteenโ€™s open structure and nearby facilities as possible causes. โ€œI immediately investigated what happenedโ€ฆ ang possibility kaya tayo nagka-worm o nagka-rat siguro kasi ang canteen natin is openโ€ฆ possible din na may mga katabing facilities, baka doon sila nanggaling.โ€

He said regular sanitation efforts are in place, including weekly clean-ups, and that vendors are consistently reminded to follow hygiene protocols. โ€œEvery Saturday, nagc-cleaning kami diyanโ€ฆ hindi naman ako nagkulang sa kanila ng mga reminders.โ€

Mr. Dela Rama added that monitoring and enforcement are ongoing, with non-compliant vendors facing possible sanctions such as non-renewal of contracts.

He also said the administration is exploring long-term solutions, including facility improvements and a possible additional canteen. โ€œNa open na rin namin ito sa committeeโ€ฆ possible pwede na magamit yun by the next school yearโ€ฆ baka mag additional po tayo ng another canteen.โ€

These three incidents of alleged contamination in the university food courts continue to raise concerns over sanitation and food safety at the campus.
