Mr. Kgosietlile Ngakaagae Named Director of Public Prosecutions in Botswana

The President of Botswana, Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, has appointed Mr. Kgosietlile Ngakaagae as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Ministry of Justice & Correctional Services. The appointment was announced today in a press release and will take effect when Mr. Ngakaagae assumes his duties.

Mr. Ngakaagae brings over 20 years of legal experience. He has worked as a Managing Partner at Ngakaagae & Co Legal Practice and previously served as a Public Prosecutor with the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. He has a wealth of experience in legal drafting, criminal prosecution, and working with both Civilian and Military Courts. He is also skilled in Civil Litigation, Extradition, and Mutual Legal Assistance Applications.

Mr. Ngakaagae is well-educated. He has certifications from Cornell University-USA in Advanced Capital Defence Training, and from Cape Town Law School in Trial Advocacy. He also completed a State Advocacy Course (NITA) and a National Institute of Trial Advocacy USA course on Anti-Terrorism, Practical and Investigative (International Law Enforcement Academy), Drugs, and Psychotropic Substances. Additionally, he holds a Project Management Certificate from Mcauvlei Institute, South Africa. He is a member of the Law Society of Botswana and a Fellow of Cornell University (Makwanyane Institute).

Job Responsibilities

As the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Ngakaagae will have important duties. These include:
- Leading the prosecution of criminal cases in Botswana.
- Overseeing legal teams to ensure fair trials.
- Advising the government on legal matters.
- Handling extradition and mutual legal assistance cases.
- Working with courts to enforce laws.
- Managing the budget and staff of the prosecution office.
- Ensuring justice is served in both Civilian and Military Courts.

Mr. Ngakaagae’s experience and training make him well-suited for this role. His appointment is expected to strengthen the justice system in Botswana.

Okavango District Councillors have halted their session, demanding immediate action on unpaid Ipelegeng dues. They’ve tasked Vice Chairperson Honourable Brian Samoka with getting clear answers from Minister Ketlhalefile Motshegwa by 2 PM today. If no satisfactory response is received, the councillors are prepared to boycott all future full council meetings until the Ipelegeng workers are paid.

Botswana Police Service (BPS) through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) Gaborone successfully secured the extradition of 42-year-old Chinese national male Weng Jiajin. The accused person was extradited from Tanzania to Botswana by NCB Gaborone and landed at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport today (22/08/2025).

He has since appeared before Broadhurst Magistrate Court facing one count of Obtaining by False Pretences. The Court heard that on 30th May 2023 in Gaborone, the accused acting together with others who were not before Court allegedly obtained money fraudulently from different people and subsequently fled the country.

The accused person is remanded in Prison and he will be back in Court on 25/08/2025.

Honourable Justice Lakhvinder Singh Walia Passes Away

The Administration of Justice in Botswana is mourning the loss of Honourable Justice Lakhvinder Singh Walia. He passed away on 20th August 2025, as announced by the Chief Justice.

Justice Walia started his career as a judge in the judiciary on 1st April 2002. He served in various courts, including the High Court of Botswana and the Gaborone divisions of the High Court. Before becoming a judge, he worked as a lawyer and later as a Private Lawyer at Walia Attorneys in Gaborone for many years.

He served as a High Court judge for 15 years, starting in 2017, and continued until his passing. Justice Walia was known for his dedication and service to the people of Botswana.

The Chief Justice and the Administration of Justice extend their deepest condolences to his wife, family, friends, and colleagues.

NIJEL AMOS TURNS TO COACHING.

Nijel Amos, Botswana’s first Olympic medalist, won silver in the 800m at the 2012 London Games at just 18. His time of 1:41.73 set a world junior record.
