So who killed the Video Star?

The television channel, created and mostly known for premiering and playing music will stop broadcasting on its MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live channels. More details are to follow for the channel's status, notably MTV HD, the flagship channel that screens some reality series will remain on air, but all music-related content have ceased operations.

The rapid rise of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is reshaping the advertising industry, but it also comes with serious risks. According to Tinee Cruz, Senior Business Director of DoubleVerify Philippines, the influx of low-quality, AI-generated websites -- what the company calls “AI slop” -- poses significant threats to brand authenticity, consumer trust, and advertising efficiency.

DoubleVerify (DV), a global ad-tech company operating in the Philippines, provides measurement, verification, and performance solutions that help advertisers ensure their media investments are safe, viewable, and aligned with brand values. Its mission, Cruz emphasized, is to make the Internet “safer, stronger, and more secure” for advertisers while protecting them from fraudulent or unsuitable environments.

Gogolook founder and global Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jeff Kuo reaffirmed the company’s commitment to keeping the core features of its Whoscall anti-scam app free for Filipinos, calling scam protection a “human right.”

Kuo said the Philippines is one of Whoscall’s fastest-growing markets, citing the country’s young, highly connected population and its status as the “social media capital of the world.” He noted that scams in the country have evolved from simple text and call scam into multi-platform threats that exploit messaging apps, social networks, and even online marketplaces.

When I ring the doorbell to Burnwater Studios and ask about Quiccs, I peek through the door and it doesn’t look like anything I expect. I know of Quiccs Maiquez through the figure that he started making in 2012 and that has brought him international renown, Teq63. So I expected to see a roomful of them.

Later, as we walk around, Quiccs will explain to me that pre-pandemic this room would’ve been filled with artists creating designs for Burnwater clients. But now it’s mostly empty, with artists working from home. Most of this afternoon, talking and seeing the inner workings and aspects of the enterprise, things aren’t exactly as I expect, but often surprising and joyful.

When people say “AI” usually they mean a chatbot. These chatbots have been transformative in empowering people to work better, understand things more, and even find insights or creative paths. However, is it a concern that interactions with AI chatbots have led some people into conspiracy-theory rabbitholes, emotional or mental breakdowns, self-harm, and sometimes worse. These cases are tragic and shouldn’t happen, and have prompted the companies behind chatbots to reassess the guardrails on their products.

For us consumers, it’s important to know what features to assess when picking a chatbot. To gain a better understanding, I talked to Josh Aquino, Head of Communications for Microsoft in the Philippines, whose work involves AI literacy and fluency building, and capacity building for different communities and stakeholders. He says, "I'm a big fan of this technology and I believe in what it can do as a force for good across really every domain, culture, and society."

I’ve been in the industry long enough to remember in 2015 that Microsoft said Windows 10 is the last Windows. Moving forward, Windows 10 will continue to receive updates indefinitely. I am also old enough to remember all the headaches when initially Windows would force update your system while you’re working on something crucial at the moment and there was no way to stop it. Fun times.

Now, ten years later, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 on October 14.

The nubia NEO 3 GT 5G was launched earlier this year, rising as a mid-range contender. If you’ve been thinking of picking up this phone then you’re in luck. nubia has announced a Limited Edition in collaboration with popular game Free Fire.

It is billed as a gamer phone, so you might already imagine what it’ll look like. Gamer phones tend to be a bit edgy or hardcore. The limited edition of the nubia NEO 3 GT does away with that approach, instead stripping down most of the techno sci-fi aesthetics into what they call a “minimalist” design. In other words, it looks like any other phone, but with some sleek designs to make the NEO 3 GT stand out more. On top of this, the phone has some cool backlights.

When I ask Sophia Sy, co-founder of SOFI AI, how she would like to be called, she shares that she is really Sophia, but that people have been calling her Sophie because of the company’s name and core product. The 25-year old has, with her collaborators, launched a chatbot service that seeks to empower businesses.

At first glance, a customer-service chatbot isn’t a necessarily exciting use-case for AI. After all, these things have been around for a long time. And if you’re anything like me, almost every time you’ve chatted with you, you’ve probably wished you could talk to a human. But what I discover in talking to Sophie is that she is well aware that she isn’t inventing something new. Instead she is taking already existing technologies and finding ways so that they can better serve her clients’ customers.

A group loosely referred to as the Startup PH guys launched a website that aims to offer a “better” version of an existing government portal.

“It was a silly idea. [I thought I could] make a better gov.ph website,” Jason Torres, a developer and a member of the Startup PH community who is now based in the United Kingdom, told me in a chat interview. Torres was referring to the current government portal, which he says is very old.

When I found out about this watch, I felt that I was the kind of wearer they were looking for. I’ve tried a lot of sports, from combat sports to a full marathon, trail runs, and even just your typical group classes at the local gym. At the same time, I’m not getting any younger and the injuries and just normal aging are piling up. Loathe as people who get to my age admit it, we do need to start tracking these.

If you’re going to track them anyway, might as well do it stylishly.

When thousands joined the September 21 rally, the debate didn’t just happen in the streets. It spilled online, where hashtags trended, posts circulated, and heated comment threads rose and sank. The same thing is happening with the flood-control issue: social media became the stage where citizens shared frustration, demanded accountability, or defended policy. But here’s the catch—what the public saw wasn’t simply the product of what people wrote. It was filtered, sorted, and amplified by design choices built into the platforms themselves.

That’s the core problem: platforms don’t just host conversations; they script them. Code and interface decide whose voices rise and whose sink, shaping public perception in ways that look natural but are anything but neutral.
