The year marks not just an 84th anniversary, but a testament to persistent faith, a vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of solidarity between Church and indigenous communities. The theme, "Pilgrimage of Solidarity: Church and Indigenous Communities Journeying to Abundant Life," perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this momentous occasion, echoing the promise of John 10:10b, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
This isn't merely a celebration of years past; it's a reflection on a shared journey, a pilgrimage undertaken together by the Church and the indigenous communities of the Diocese of Dagupan. For 84 years, this journey has been guided by the unwavering faith and dedication of its leaders: Bishop Gaerlan, Bishop Edilberto Bautista, Bishop Desiderio Dingcon, Bishop Alberto Ramento, Bishop Hermogenes Ranche, Bishop Lito Cruz, Bishop Emmanuel Sampayan, Bishop Santiago Azaula, and Bishop Jovy Fodulla. Each Bishop, in their own unique way, has contributed to the rich legacy of this diocese, shepherding their flock through times of both prosperity and challenge.
The anniversary isn't just about looking back; it's about acknowledging the profound impact of this partnership. The indigenous communities, with their deep-rooted traditions and wisdom, have enriched the spiritual life of the diocese, offering unique perspectives and contributions to the faith. In turn, the Church has provided support, advocacy, and a platform for the indigenous communities to share their voices and preserve their cultural heritage. This mutual respect and collaboration have been instrumental in fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose.
The "abundant life" promised in John 10:10b is not merely material abundance, but a holistic well-being – spiritual, social, and economic. This anniversary celebrates the progress made towards this vision: the empowerment of marginalized communities, the preservation of cultural identity, and the flourishing of faith in the hearts of all who call this diocese home.
The celebration itself should be a reflection of this theme. It should be a vibrant display of the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous communities, interwoven with the traditions of the Church. It should be a space for sharing stories, celebrating achievements, and renewing the commitment to continue this pilgrimage of solidarity towards a future where all experience the fullness of life. The legacy of the nine bishops who have guided this diocese serves as a beacon, illuminating the path forward, reminding us that the journey continues, and the promise of abundant life remains ever before us.
