The University Peace Park transformed into a vibrant carnival ground as PANAGHIUSA 2025 kicked off Peryang Pinoy, this year’s organization fair hosted by the Council of Organizations (COO).

Blending the warmth of Filipino fiesta culture and the buzz of campus life, the fair invited both new and returning students to discover organizations that could make their college journey more meaningful.

From colorful bunting and traditional game booths to creative recruitment games, each organization embraced the Perya vibe in their own style; complete with prizes, cultural flair, and the spirit of camaraderie that aligns with MSU-IIT's commitment to inclusivity.

Margarrette Gencono, a sophomore from BS Philosophy (Applied Ethics), shared how this year's organization fair truly renewed her passion to engage in the vibrant campus life, especially through the diverse booths showcasing various organizations.

“It really felt like a celebration of creativity and community,” she expressed. “The performances, booths, and crowd interaction made me even more inspired to be part of a group that shares the same passion for arts,” she added.

She further emphasized the importance of joining an organization that aligns with one’s interests, noting that she is seeking a group that values creativity, collaboration, and a passion for performance.

Over 20 organizations filled the fairgrounds, offering opportunities that ranged from academic support and artistic expression to socio-civic engagement and faith-based communities.

𝗚𝗮𝗯𝗶 𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: 𝗔 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗼 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗱

Stories have always come in many forms. This time, The Alampat: Gabi ng Sining 2025 revisited a tale that has been explored and retold countless times with a new light. It was not merely a performance but a vivid telling of a Mindanao that is intensely diverse, artistic, and raw.

The performances held on the evening of August 11, 2025 showcased all the best that the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology’s (MSU-IIT) Resident Cultural Groups (RCG) have to offer.

The MSU-IIT Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG), Octava Choral Society, Orions Dance Group, MSU-IIT Integrated Developmental School (IDS) Ringkaran, Kalilang Traditional Music Ensemble, Kalimulan Cultural Dance Troupe, and the Echoes band joined forces with the university’s dance sports and arnis teams to create a production that is true to the night’s theme: Sundayag Mindanaw.

Each performance told different aspects found in the culture and everyday life within the island, and took inspiration from experiences spanning generations, mixing traditional pieces with modern artistry.

Octava performer and third-year Bachelor of Arts and English Language Studies (BAELS) student Rayyan Ishmael Mabini shared that the creation of the performances was not a walk in the park. Gabaqan (Gabaan), the piece staged by their choral society, in particular, had been rather difficult to materialize.

The heavy emotion and message presented by the piece required an equally large toll on the energy of the performers. Nevertheless, bringing it to life on stage had been a breathtaking feeling.

“The experience was exhilarating. It was a true test of the artistic spirit, finding ways to perform the same piece while fighting the environment, time and other RPG'S and whatever new change we had to adapt to without compromising our vision and identity,” he expressed, adding that despite the physical strain it caused him, he cannot wait to experience it all over again for the first time in the following year.

The Alampat: Gabi ng Sining 2025 was not only a homage to the resilience and skill needed in the performing arts, it was also a celebration of all the things that Mindanao stands for. It gave us a beautiful visualization of the colorful culture and traditions within the island, which, to this day, continue to persist and evolve. The spark of appreciation for our own ignited by the performances that evening continued to burn bright, even as the lights from the gymnasium dwindled and faded into the night.

Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) welcomed over 2,870 newly admitted students on Monday, August 11, through the much-awaited Shepherding Tradition, also known as the Institute Parade.

Freshmen from the university’s seven colleges flocked to the university gymnasium for the annual event, which formally welcomed them into college life at MSU-IIT. The shepherding aimed to orient students on essential university services, processes for addressing concerns, the roles and responsibilities of various organizations and offices, and other college life essentials.

For some freshmen, the shepherding experience was both exciting and fun. Katrina Izabelle Maiso, a first-year BS Psychology student from Davao del Norte, described it as “very enjoyable” and admitted feeling “culture-shocked” by the lively atmosphere of the campus, particularly in her home college, the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS).

“Ang College of Arts and Social Sciences kay very active. Like culture-shock siya personally para sa akoa kay dili man gud kaayo ko naga-apil og mga activities jud,” Maiso shared, adding that the experience made her feel she would truly be able to step out of her comfort zone.

First-year BA Political Science students Christopher Pananganan and Abdul Diron also found the event to be warm and lively.

Diron recalled seeing students singing, playing games, and enjoying the event, saying, “It’s so good as a freshman to see most of my seniors being here in MSU.”

When asked about their expectations for college life at MSU-IIT, they shared that they hold the university in high regard.

“We all know that MSU-IIT is [ranked] very high in terms of its reputation [especially] its education quality, so I want to expect nothing less than to be able to learn such skills that will greatly impact my future,” Pananganan noted.

Meanwhile, Diron shared that having lived in Iligan for a long time, he has seen firsthand how remarkable life at MSU-IIT can be, noting that he has met many seniors who have achieved great things.

11/08/2025

Arachnids have always been storytellers. Their webs, spun in delicate lines, hold not just the echoes of their movements but the whispers of the world around them. Some say the first stories were never written in ink but woven in silk— fragile, intricate, yet unbreakable in purpose.

So, too, was 𝗔𝗿𝗻𝗶 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗿.

No one remembers the exact moment they appeared, only that when the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) was built, Arni was already there, perched in the water spout, watching. They were no ordinary arachnid. They moved differently, shifting with the tides of discourse and debate. They mimicked students’ mannerisms, borrowed their expressions, and learned the rhythm of hands — so many hands — scribbling, typing, crafting knowledge into form.

A quiet observer, an unseen weaver, Arni made CASS their home.

Everyone knows the story of the itsy-bitsy spider. She climbs the water spout, searching for comfort, for home, only to be swept away by the rain. Yet she climbs again, undeterred, always returning.

Arni Webber saw something in that tale.

They watched as students wrestled with words, drafting and redrafting, questioning and rethinking, building ideas that sometimes stood strong and sometimes crumbled under the weight of scrutiny. They saw thinkers dismantle meaning only to reconstruct it anew. They saw activists return to the streets even when their voices were drowned out. And in their ceaseless weaving, Arni found their own purpose — not just to observe but to weave these voices into a larger thread.

One night, when the first issue of CASSayuran was being prepared, the editors found something strange. Across their drafts stretched a delicate web, shimmering under the dim light of the publication office. At its center, woven in fine silken strands, was a single phrase:

“𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝘾𝘼𝙎𝙎, 𝙗𝙮 𝘾𝘼𝙎𝙎, 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝘾𝘼𝙎𝙎.”

From that moment on, Arni Webber became more than a silent observer. They became the spirit of CASSayuran - the many-legged storyteller, the unseen weaver of words, the keeper of voices past and present.

No one has ever truly seen Arni Webber up close, but their presence lingers in whispers and webs. Over time, students and editors have shared myths about the elusive arachnid:

It is said that any unfinished article left in the CASSayuran office overnight will be found covered in a thin layer of webbing the next morning. Strangely, the drafts often seem clearer, as if touched by an unseen hand.

Some editors claim that typos vanish mysteriously from their final prints, as though a small, unseen figure has crept between the lines to correct them.

Those who have spent long hours writing alone in CASS sometimes hear the faint sound of silk unravelling, as if a story is being woven in the darkness. Some say if you listen closely, you can hear the echoes of past writers whispering through the strands.

Before any issue of CASSayuran reaches the public, tradition holds that Arni Webber is the first to read it. And when the final print run of the year is done, a small, glistening thread always appears on the editor’s desk—a silent seal of approval.

This is 𝗔𝗿𝗻𝗶 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗿, CASSayuran's Icon. Watch out for them, as they will be watching everyone, observing and listening, looking for stories to share.

𝙒𝙀𝙇𝘾𝙊𝙈𝙀, 𝘼𝙍𝘼𝘾𝙃𝙉𝙄𝘿𝙎!

With themes on the rise and DPs flock the feed, some had sported three different frames in a day. Yet, like the way they were designed in curve or edges, we are molded in ways uniquely our own. This is once again a journey of beginnings, where we will meet people with stories unlike our own, each carrying different struggles and hopes.

In these diverse narratives, we discover truths that go beyond the textbooks we read and the debates whispered in classroom corners—the truth that the reading becomes reality in the life of the one seated beside us. It is in these shared experiences that purpose takes root, resolve is strengthened, and a collective spirit inspires change.

As part of our tradition of well-wishes for the upcoming Academic Year 2025 - 2026, we extend our warmest welcome or what we fondly call a 'webcome' to you, our newest Damangs! May the College of Arts and Social Sciences be your home for growth and renewal in pursuit of influencing the future.

As part of efforts to enhance and align educational quality through continuous improvement and mutual recognition of academic programs, four degree programs under the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) underwent the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) Programme Assessment on August 5, 2025, at Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology.

The assessed programs include BA Filipino, BA English Language Studies, BA Sociology, and BA Political Science.

The AUN-QA followed a framework in advancing a quality assurance system to uphold and enhance teaching, research and academic standards across AUN member universities. They have done this through recommending areas for improvement on evidence-based methods, where approaches are shared, assessed, and refined.

As part of its 453rd AUN-QA assessment, MSU-IIT welcomed visiting assessors for an on-site evaluation. Assigned to the Filipino program were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ornsiri Cheunsuang and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hamimah Ujir; for English Language Studies, Dr. Wan Ahmad Kamil, FASc, FMIC, and Assoc. Prof. Pakpong Pochanart; for Sociology, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Tuan and Prof. Dr. Yetty Komalasari Dewi; and for Political Science, Prof. Dr. Irfan Naufal Umar and Dr. Porngarm Virutamasen, SFHEA.

Initially, the aforementioned departments prepared and submitted a Self-Assessment Report (SAR) using the AUN-QA criteria. This report included evidence on teaching, curriculum, learning outcomes, faculty qualifications, facilities, and support services, among others.

To validate evidence provided in the SAR, assessors conducted an ocular inspection within the campus along with interviews with students, key faculty members, and support staff.

Today, August 6, assessors are set to meet with employers and alumni for an interview through a hybrid set-up to evaluate the relevance and impact of the academic programs beyond the classroom.

This makes CASS the first college in the entire MSU System to go through the regional program assessment anchored on international standards.

The Class of 2025 has officially been conferred their degrees as Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) celebrated its 55th Commencement Ceremony for the Second Semester of Academic Year 2024-2025 on Friday, June 27, at the MSU-IIT Gymnasium.

A total of 2,163 graduates were honored during the ceremony. Among them were 22 Extracurricular Awardees, 1 University Student Leadership Awardee, and 25 Sustainable Futures Research Awardees. The graduating class also boasted 1,551 Latin honorees, comprising 62 Summa Cum Laudes, 761 Magna Cum Laudes, and 728 Cum Laudes.

Of the total graduates, 452 came from the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), making it the college with the highest number of graduates this year. This group includes several institute awardees, such as Jayvee Bondoc for Debate, Chenie Marie Cellan for Instrument (Female), Nestor Ceasar Grageda III for Vocal (Male), and Jakelou Kate Zalsos for Vocal (Female).

Chancellor Alizedney M. Ditucalan kicked off this momentous event with a welcome speech addressed to all attendees, along with the introduction of the highly anticipated guest of honor, award-winning journalist Kara Patria David-Cancio.

David stepped up to the microphone to share life lessons she had learned from interacting with people, reflecting that graduations should not be seen as pagtatapos but rather as pagsisimula, as she inspired optimism in the graduates about to embark on life after school.

“Never give up on people. Never give up on your dreams. Kung nais mong humaba ang iyong buhay, matuto kang magbigay,” Kara David urged the graduates in a simple yet heartfelt speech, concluding her address by greeting them: “Maligayang Pagsisimula!”

Representing the graduating class, this year’s Institute Valedictorian and Summa Cum Laude, Fahadh P. Abas from the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), also took the spotlight with a message.

“This may sound boastful to all of you listening, but I’ve always known I’d end up here on this very podium,” Abas expressed with pride, crediting the hard work put into his achievement not only by himself but also by those around him, especially his late sister, an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW).

“Ladies and gentlemen, I am telling my sister’s story, rather than mine, because my success was built on others’ sacrifices.”

Abas continued his speech with an assertion that dreaming is political, advocating for the proper compensation of workers, before concluding with words of gratitude.

“Dreaming, the act of envisioning yourself in a place of success and happiness, is highly political.”

Following his speech was the graduation song led by Music Awardees for Vocal, Zalsos and Grageda. The graduates then took their oath under the leadership of Alumni Regent Engr. Samuel B. Sabenecio, before the ceremony concluded with MSU-IIT’s Himno ng Pamantasan and the recessional.

"Ibabahagi ko sa inyo ang life lessons, life lessons na natutunan ko sa aking pakikisalamuha sa ibang tao."

Met with resounding cheers, renowned Filipino journalist, television host, professor, and educational administrator Kara Patria David-Cancio steps onto the illustrious stage of MSU-IIT's gymnasium to give the Commencement Address at MSU-IIT's 55th Commencement Exercises for the Second Semester of Academic Year 2024-2025, today, June 27.

Introduced and addressed by Chancellor Alizedney Ditucalan as "someone we know, and love," Kara David steps up to the podium to impart a few words, jokingly starting with "Avisala," a greeting from the language of Encantadia, harking back to the chancellor's humorous claim of watching the GMA Network's show.

Kara David strides in simple delivery, youthful and energetic humour. "I am 51 years old, but I still feel like a child," she said.

She christens her speech with an assured stream of expressions that reveal her genuine regard for herself as a mere learner of life at large. With all eyes and ears on her, she explains how graduation speeches are the most difficult to make, before introducing her own: Pagtatapos at Pagsisimula.

"Kung nais mong humaba ang iyong buhay, matuto kang magbigay." Kara introduces her first life lesson to share with the graduating class, with an anecdote from one of her documentaries where the late Mike Enriquez emerged as a symbol of generosity through his help for Pamilya Liwanag, citing how your physical embodiment may pass, but your life lives on in the generosity you leave behind.

"Never give up on your dreams... Makapangyarihan po ang ating mga pangarap. May kapangyarihan po itong makapagpabago ng kamalayan o ng mindset. Makapangyarihan po ang ating mga pangarap, kaya nitong makapagpabago ng buhay at pag-iisip at kaya nitong baguhin ang komunidad — so do not ever give up on your dream."

David extends her speech with a second life lesson on never giving up on your dreams. Kara has been a vessel in sustaining young Filipino dreams to fruition, inspiring many through her stories of triumph from the people she met in her journalistic pursuit.

"Never give up on people... Gaano man tayo kahirap sa salapi, mayaman tayo sa malasakit... Ang mabigat ay gumagaan kapag marami ang pumapasan... Never underestimate the power of compassion."

David imparts her last life lesson, explaining how it takes a village; life is a community, and how it does not take much to extend your hand to those in need.
"Hindi mo kailangan maging milyonaryo para makatulong sa kapwa mo... Hindi mo kailangan maging pulitiko para makapaghatid ng pagbabago."

Ending her speech, Kara ponders why we call graduations a conclusion—"pagtatapos," when it simply margins a fraction of a life yet to be fulfilled. In willful glee, she ends her time on the microphone by reminding the class of her life lessons, joyfully prefacing a hopeful beginning, and screaming:

"𝙈𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙖𝙜𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙢𝙪𝙡𝙖 𝙨𝙖 𝙞𝙣𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙡𝙖𝙝𝙖𝙩!"
