One day, you’ll open the door to silence.
No click of claws on hardwood,
no eager whimper,
just the echo of what used to be.

One day, you’ll reach down to pet them
and find only air.
Your fingers will remember
the exact softness behind their ears,
the way they leaned into your touch
like you were the only thing that mattered.

One day, their bowl will sit untouched,
their favorite toy will gather dust,
and you’ll realize—
grief isn’t one big moment.
It’s a thousand little absences
piling up like paw prints fading in the snow.

Time doesn’t just fly—it slips through your fingers
like sand, like fur you swore you’d vacuum later,
like the last warmth of their body against yours.

So tonight, let them hog the bed.
Let them bark at nothing.
Let them wake you at 3 AM just to go outside
and then change their mind.
Scoop the messes, save the chewed-up shoes,
laugh when they steal your spot on the couch.

Because one day, you’d give anything
to be annoyed by them just one more time.

And when that day comes,
the love they left behind
will be the only thing
that doesn’t feel like a ghost.
