When my grandfather, the painter ๐ก๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ถ๐๐ผ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ฆ๐ฟ., graduated from the founding class of the U.P. College of Fine Arts in 1914 (they were only six menโincluding a young ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ผ ๐๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ผ๐น๐ผ!), his first job that summer was a commission by his father, ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ผ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐.
The job? To design a set and stage backdrop for Severinoโs theater production company, the ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ปฬ๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐๐ฒ๐น๐ฎ ๐ง๐ฎ๐ด๐ฎ๐น๐ฎ.
The play? ๐ช๐ฎ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ด ๐ฆ๐๐ด๐ฎ๐, his fatherโs anti-imperialist hit and crowd-pleasing love story, at the ๐ญ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ถ๐น๐น๐ฎ ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ on Azcarraga Street.
A hundred years later, it somehow came full circle: During the late 2000s, I was inspired to pay tribute to the creative legacy of Severino Reyes.
He was not only my great-grandfather, but arguably the greatest Filipino storyteller of the 20th centuryโboth through his 50 stage productions and 500 ๐๐ผ๐น๐ฎ ๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ด stories.
How? By turning his century-old masterpiece into a modern-day musical.
In 2007, my own film production company and creative content studio, ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฒ.๐๐ผ ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฎ, began collaborating with the award-winning playwright ๐ฅ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ ๐ฉ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ, whom I commissioned to create a screenplay and libretto based on Walang Sugat.
The brief? A contemporized comic adaptation, a gripping story of love and war.
A year later, ๐ช๐ฎ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐โthe musical comedy before you todayโwas born.
Eighty years after Severino Reyes's death and 125 years after his subversive masterpiece was written at the sunset of Spanish rule, we at Indie.Go Media and ๐ฃ๐๐ง๐ are happy that the Walang Aray script we created in his memory will finally be mounted on the stageโfor a new generation to enjoy.
Like its original incarnation, may it inspire, entertain, provoke, and surprise.
