DOT sees Marinduque’s potential for world-class tourist destination
BOAC, Marinduque (PIA)—Marinduque’s rich cultural heritage and natural charm continue to attract national attention, with tourism officials declaring the island province as having strong potential to become a world-class tourist destination.
This was the key message during a press conference held in celebration of the first founding anniversary of Marinduque State University (MarSU), where officials from the Department of Tourism (DOT) and local leaders emphasized the island’s unique appeal and cultural value.
“We still see the vast potential of Marinduque not only as a world-class destination, but also as a significant heritage site,” said DOT MIMAROPA Regional Director Roberto P. Alabado.
Alabado said that Marinduque remains one of the few places in the Philippines where Spanish-era traditions, rural farming culture and ancestral Filipino homes are still visible and lived experiences.
“In Marinduque, you can still see carabaos used in farming, rice fields stretching across the countryside and in every town’s población, heritage houses that proudly showcase our Filipino identity,” he added.
While the island is already renowned for its annual Moriones Lenten Rites and scenic views, Alabado pointed to another rising attraction: the PUSOMOTO initiative, which promotes the “Marinduque Loop,” a scenic motorcycle route that invites riders from across the Philippines to explore the island’s beauty on two wheels.
He also noted Marinduque’s absence of major fast-food chains, calling it an asset rather than a drawback.
“It’s a good thing. Tourists are introduced to authentic Filipino cuisine here — from native dishes to local delicacies like ‘Itim na Kari-Kari,’ made with banana heart, a true taste of Marinduque’s culinary identity,” he said.
The discussion also explored strategies to boost Marinduque’s visibility on national and international platforms, with social media campaigns seen as a key tool to draw more tourists to the province.
Tourism officials hope that with continued support, Marinduque can position itself as a must-visit destination for both local and international travelers seeking cultural immersion, natural beauty and authentic Filipino experiences.
Joining Alabado at the event were DOT Undersecretary for Special Projects Ferdinand Cañete Jumapao, MarSU president Diosdado P. Zulueta and Provincial Tourism and Cultural Officer Jose Rino Labay. (DN/JBG/PIA MIMAROPA-Marinduque
