Today is a day when many voices want to be heard. I hope that all those who must be held accountable will finally face justice in this kind of system.
As an OFW or more precisely, a trainee here in Japan for a year now, I’ve experienced so many things that I never had in the Philippines. From the moment I left until today, nothing has really changed. In fact, things have only gotten worse. The rampant corruption continues, and every time an issue arises, it simply gets overshadowed by another one yet not a single person is ever held responsible.
As an OFW who contributes to the economy and even pays taxes when sending money to our loved ones, it is truly heartbreaking to witness these scenarios. Here in Japan, even if taxes are high, you can clearly see where those taxes go. Public facilities are well-maintained, services are efficient, and the government provides additional support to its citizens. For example, when natural disasters damage roads, you will see them repaired the very next day. It never takes years. In the Philippines, however, you will rarely see proper infrastructure improvements, and sometimes, even newly built roads are deliberately destroyed and rebuilt again for PROFIT.
I know that the Philippines is still far behind Japan when it comes to governance and public service. But I believe that we should put an end to this toxic cycle. We should no longer tolerate corruption or let issues simply pass us by. Every second, the government is stealing from us and every second, we are losing opportunities for a better nation.
We, as Filipinos, deserve GOOD governance, not Corrupt governance. We deserve leaders who will serve the people, not exploit them. Change will only happen if we demand it, if we hold people accountable, and if we stop settling for less than what we truly deserve.
