The name “Catanduanes” holds fascinating legends and narratives, showcasing the island’s rich history and cultural heritage.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘂 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱
One story traces the name back to “𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘂,” a type of native click beetle once abundant on the island. Locals referred to the island as “𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗻,” meaning the land of tandu beetles. When the Spaniards arrived, they adapted the name into “Catanduanes,” leaving their mark on its history.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱
Another tale connects the name to the “𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗴” tree, which once flourished on the island. Originally, the place was called “𝗞𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻,” meaning “the land of samdong trees.” However, the Spaniards, finding it difficult to pronounce words ending in “-ng,” transformed it into “𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻.” Over time, this evolved into the name we know today: “Catanduanes.”

These legends highlight the island’s enduring ties to nature, its history, and the evolution of its cultural identity. Each name carries with it a story, a legacy that continues to define the Happy Island.

𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪?

Catanduanes, now affectionately called the Happy Island, did not begin as an independent province. In the early 1900s, it was part of Ambos Camarines and later became a sub-province of Albay.

The journey to independence began when Congressman Francisco Perfecto authored House Bill No. 301, a historic legislation advocating for the separation of Catanduanes from Albay. The bill was approved on September 26, 1945, and shortly after, signed into law by President Sergio Osmeña on October 24, 1945.

This pivotal moment marked the birth of Catanduanes as a province, paving the way for its growth into a vibrant community celebrated for its rich cultural heritage, colorful history, and distinct identity.
