OCUCARES | CDRRMO orders evacuation of coastal barangays as seawater recedes
Following a tsunami advisory at 7:47 A.M. issued after a magnitude 7.0 offshore earthquake struck near Sarangani early this morning, residents living near the shoreline are advised to move further inland.
Boat owners in harbors, estuaries, and shallow coastal waters are urged to take precautionary measures, as the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) enforces strict compliance with evacuation and safety protocols.
Authorities strongly advise residents and visitors in coastal areas of Zamboanga del Sur and other potentially affected provinces to immediately proceed to higher ground or move farther inland until an official all-clear is issued.
Residents in several coastal areas have reported a noticeable recession of seawater. In Barangay Bolong, locals observed an unusual withdrawal of water from the shoreline, according to a livestream by Brigada News FM Zamboanga Duro. A sudden drop in sea level was also reported along Poblacion-Aplaya in Manicahan, Zamboanga City, based on drone footage and photographs circulating online. Authorities warn that these may be signs of an approaching tsunami and are urging residents to evacuate coastal areas immediately.
In response to the threat, the CDRRMO implemented mandatory evacuations in compliance with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) advisory on tsunami preparedness and mandatory evacuation measures. Coastal communities, particularly those closest to the earthquake's epicenter, are being prioritized.
The CDRRMO continues to monitor the situation and urges residents not to return to coastal areas until authorities issue an official all clear.
