Hazrat Maulana M***i Abdul Karim (may Allah have mercy on him) was from Gora Ara, Saidpur, Tehsil Khoi Ratta, District Kotli, Azad Kashmir. He was born in 1883 and passed away in 1963.
Here, I do not wish to elaborate on how he was the jurist of Kashmir, how he defended the finality of Prophethood, or the major role he played in the non-payment of taxes movement and the Kashmir freedom struggle, because writing about these would require several books. For now, I will just mention two incidents on Facebook.
First incident:
According to Habib-ur-Rehman Afaaqi Sahib, Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, District Kotli, who heard this from his respected father, M***i Sahib had gone to Khoor or Giaain in the hilly region. The agents of Maharaja Hari Singh tied their horses inside M***i Sahib’s mosque. When M***i Sahib found out, he rushed to the mosque—not to untie the horses, but to start beating them. As a result, some horses broke free from their ropes, while others ran away along with the Maharaja’s agents.
When this news reached Hari Singh or his senior officials, they ordered their men not to take their horses there again, saying, “M***i is a fierce man!”
Second incident:
Haji Raj Muhammad Sahib (late) from Khoor Naar Taasan once told me about an event when K.H. Khurshid, the President of Azad Kashmir, came to Khoi Ratta for a gathering. The event was presided over by Chaudhry Sada Hussain, and Chaudhry Maqbool Raza was the stage secretary.
As the program was concluding, M***i Abdul Karim Sahib was invited to say a final prayer. However, M***i Sahib declined, saying:
“Has it come down to the M***i of Kashmir, M***i Abdul Karim, being called just for a prayer? I was supposed to speak, highlight people’s issues, and propose solutions! And this so-called President of Azad Kashmir—such an incapable man! I wouldn’t even consider him worthy of sweeping the streets! He doesn’t even know who M***i Abdul Karim is or what role he played in the Kashmir freedom movement!”
Haji Raj Muhammad Sahib (late) further told me that when he heard these words, he feared that the President of Azad Kashmir might order M***i Sahib’s arrest. But instead, K.H. Khurshid just kept smiling.
This was the remarkable personality of Hazrat Maulana M***i Abdul Karim (may Allah have mercy on him).
We pray that Allah grants him a place in His infinite mercy.
His son, Maulana Irfan Sahib, is an extraordinary personality, and indeed, all his children are intelligent and capable individuals. I had the honor of meeting Maulana Irfan Sahib, and M***i Abdul Karim’s youngest daughter is married to Zia-ul-Haq Gorsi. By the grace of Allah, I met her through Gorsi Sahib. She is a woman of great abilities, may Allah keep her safe.
May Allah grant us the ability to follow in the footsteps of Hazrat Maulana M***i Abdul Karim (may Allah have mercy on him). Ameen.
