Dera Ghazi Khan - A major breakthrough in cardiac diagnostics was achieved in South Punjab when Sardar Fateh Muhammad Khan Buzdar Institute of Cardiology (SFMKIC)in Dera Ghazi Khan successfully installed a state-of-the-art Cardiac MRI machine. This was revealed by the Medical Superintendent Dr Abdul Rehman Chandia during an exclusive interview with The Nation.

Dr. Chandia described the installation as a revolutionary step forward for cardiac patients across the region. “Despite limited resources, SFMKIC has become the leading heart hospital in South Punjab thanks to consistent teamwork and the generous support and guidance of Health Secretary Mr. Azmat Mehmood,” he said.

The hospital is now the first in South Punjab and only the second after Lahore to offer Cardiac MRI, a non-invasive imaging technique that uses magnetic resonance to provide a detailed, radiation-free examination of the heart’s muscles, blood flow, valves, and structural abnormalities. “This new facility allows us to diagnose complex cardiac conditions without painful or invasive procedures like angiography,” Dr. Chandia noted.

He further explained that while angiography remains crucial for detecting and treating arterial blockages, Cardiac MRI is especially effective for patients suffering from myocardial weakness, inflammation, or congenital heart anomalies, and it is safer for patients with kidney issues or pediatric conditions due to the absence of radiation.

The service is now available free of cost in both morning and evening OPD shifts, and is already benefiting dozens of patients daily. Dr. Chandia added that international MRI specialist Mr. Walter is currently training three cardiologists and two radiologists at the hospital to ensure high-standard diagnostic accuracy.
