THE OCEAN IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND SO TERRIFYING AT THE SAME TIME.
A freediver named Michael Board sat on the edge of a 202-meter deep sinkhole in the Bahamas while photographer Adam Stern captured the image from above. The result is one of the most stunning and terrifying underwater photographs ever taken.
In the photograph, Board floats on the lip of a vertical underwater cliff where the sea depth transitions abruptly from roughly 15 meters on one side to nearly 200 meters on the other. That is a drop of over 180 meters, or nearly 600 feet, in a single vertical line. The diver sits at the edge of that drop with his fins hanging over the abyss while the rest of the ocean floor is close enough to touch on the other side of the frame.
Stern shared the image on Facebook on September 29, 2018, and identified the location as Dean's Blue Hole in the comments section. Board, the man in the picture, also shared the image in a December 2018 Facebook post, stating he took part in a competition called "Vertical Blue," an invite-only freediving competition held at Dean's Blue Hole every year.
The photograph has been shared millions of times on social media, with commenters reacting with a mix of awe and anxiety. Some people say the image makes their stomach drop every time they see it. Others describe a strange longing to experience that kind of weightlessness over an abyss. A few simply ask how the diver managed to keep breathing while sitting on the edge of something that terrifying.
Have you ever seen a photo that made your stomach drop just by looking at it?
