A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Chipursan Valley near the Pakistan–Afghanistan border late Monday, leaving residents of several villages to spend a freezing night under the open sky.
The tremor, which occurred around 8:58 p.m. on October 13, 2025, had its epicentre near Shehr-e-Sabz and Rash*t at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
The earthquake caused cracks in houses, walls, and ceilings, while smaller structures and boundary walls, including animal shelters, sustained minor damage in villages such as Shehr-e-Sabz, Rash*t, and Zoodkhun. Residents reported experiencing more than a dozen explosion-like sounds and continuous rumbling from beneath the ground that lasted several minutes, describing the event as unusually strong and terrifying.
Local authorities have been notified, but access to the remote valley remains limited due to rugged terrain and distance from major towns. Officials are assessing the situation and monitoring for any potential aftershocks.
