Attabad Lake at Stake:
Attabad Lake, formed due to a landslide at Attabad Sarat Hunza in 2010 is in vulnerable condition.

According to reports nature conservation organizations have expressed serious concerns on the unplanned construction of hotels and resorts around the lake. The sewerage and waste disposal isn't done keeping the environmental standards. Another serious threat is posed by the increasing number of speed boats operated for the excursion of tourists at the lake. These motor boats fuel and fumes also contribute a lot in the degradation of this ecosystem.

It is pertinent to mention that in a recent flooding event at Aeenabad Nullah has partially damaged a luxury resort built at the bank of Attabad Lake. The resort was lashed out by social media activists over polluting the lake by mismanaging their wastes and sewers.

DG WWF-Pakistan Hammad Naqi Khan m in a letter dated 14th July 2021 to the Director Gilgit-Baltistan Environmental Protection Agency raised similar concerns on this issue and offered to conduct a collaborative site assessment.

A meeting of the IUCN Pakistan National Committee Members held on July 30, 2021 also expressed their concerns on the said issue. The participants have demanded that GBEPA should enforce strict regulations to protect the fragile eco-sytem of Attabad Lake. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Roomi S. Hayat, and Malik Amin Aslam Khan Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Climate Change and IUCN Global Vice President and Regional Councilor Asia also attended the meeting.
