The legacy of Raja Gohar Aman featuring Advovate Ashfaq. Another local ruler of Gilgit-Baltistan: a freedom figher and a revolutionary figure standing against the British and Dogra imperialism and colonialism. وہ حکمران جس نے ڈوگرہ سلطنت کو دو بار شکست دی — Raja Gohar Aman of Yasin, the warrior king who expelled Dogra forces from Gilgit in 1848 and again in 1852, and held the region until his death in 1860. While colonial writers reduced him to a footnote, his resistance shaped the entire political future of Gilgit-Baltistan.
In this episode, we uncover the untold story of a leader whose legacy the British feared — and tried to erase.

The Story of Shiri Badat by Dr. G.W. Leitner.
Featuring Advoacate Ashfaq. Was he a Cannibal? Or a Myth or a Hero? In 1866, was the first European to record the story of Shri Badat, which he published in 1877 as “The Historical Legend of the Origin of Ghilghit”. He noted that, “the legend … which chronicles the … rise of Ghilghit … is not devoid of interest either from an historical or a purely literary point of view”. (Leitner 1877 III:6)

Leitner seems to have considered the legend a mixture of fact and fiction, as evidenced by his title and by his reference to both “historical” and “purely literary” points of view. Yet it was the historical point of view that drew the attention of those who came after Leitner.

From imperial rivalries to forgotten chronicles—this is where history of Gilgit-Baltistan meets global power politics.

The Great Game between the Russian Tsar and the British Empire wasn’t just about territory—it was about control over strategic lifelines like the Oxus River. But beyond geopolitics, colonial narratives were being shaped.

Figures like Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner attempted to “document” the region, while travelers like Marco Polo described Bolor as the mysterious land of the “Kafirs”—raising questions about perception vs reality.

And then came the ripple effects of the Tibet-China War, which reshaped the lives of agro-pastoral communities along the Silk Road, altering trade, culture, and power structures in ways still felt today.

This is not just history—it’s the untold story of Gilgit-Baltistan at the crossroads of empires.

ہم کون ہیں؟ کہاں سے آئے ہیں؟

The Bolor Kingdom ruled Gilgit-Baltistan centuries before
modern borders existed. Shiri Badat was their last king —
yet the British colonial project buried, twisted and
reframed his story to disconnect us from our own roots.

Colonel Schomberg called him a Hindu king.
Others called him a cannibal.
But was any of it true?

In this podcast, Advocate Ashfaq breaks down:
▶ The forgotten Bolor Kingdom & its golden Buddhist era
▶ The Gilgit Manuscripts — Pakistan’s oldest library
▶ How Tibet, China, Russia & Britain all wanted to
control GB
▶ The real legend of Shiri Badat vs the colonial version
▶ Why our history is scattered across foreign museums
▶ Gohar Aman — the last unifier who refused to submit

Slaves do not flourish intellectually.
And a people without history are a people without identity.
