Washington, D.C., July 23, 2025 – The Europe Today: Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced that the United States and Japan have reached a trade agreement that includes the imposition of a 15% tariff on U.S. imports from Japan, according to media reports. The announcement was made via a post on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social.

In the post, Trump claimed the deal entails $550 billion in Japanese investments into the United States and provisions for increased Japanese market access to American exporters, particularly in the automotive and agricultural sectors. He specifically mentioned improved opportunities for U.S. producers of cars, trucks, rice, and certain other agricultural products.

However, the post did not include any reference to the current 25% tariff on Japanese automobiles — a critical sector for Japan, which accounts for over a quarter of its exports to the U.S.

Located in the very heart of Central Asia, Uzbekistan is becoming an increasingly appealing destination for international investors. Over the past seven years, the country has attracted 120 billion US dollars in investments and established over 6,000 enterprises. In particular, in 2024 alone, the volume of investments reached 35 billion dollars, while exports totaled 27 billion dollars.

So, what exactly makes Uzbekistan attractive to investors? Let us take a closer look at the main factors.

Firstly, the country is undergoing large-scale reforms aimed at liberalizing the economy and improving the investment climate.

Since 2017, the government has been actively engaged in the privatization of state-owned enterprises, opening the door to private investment across various sectors – from energy to agriculture. In addition, the government has simplified business registration procedures, reducing the process to just 30 minutes from the time of application.

Brussels, July 23, 2025 - The Europe Today: While the linguistic battle between Dutch and French in Belgium has long dominated public discourse, a quieter, more perilous struggle has unfolded in the southern region of Wallonia. The Walloon language—once the lingua franca of southern Belgium—is now labeled "definitely endangered" by UNESCO and faces possible extinction in the 21st century.

A Romance language that evolved from Latin around the year 1000, Walloon developed alongside French, not from it, and is part of the broader langues d’oïl family that includes standard French. For centuries, Walloon thrived in the daily lives of Walloons—spoken in homes, markets, and streets. But its presence has faded drastically over the last century.

"It’s always the small who get crushed," an old Walloon saying—"C’ èst todi lès ptits qu’ on spotche!"—poignantly sums up the fate of this marginalized language.
