Today, I had the honor of hosting a webinar that brought together aspiring doctors and medical students from Kyrgyzstan 🇰🇬
It was more than just a talk — it was a heartfelt conversation about the real journey after medical school.

I also had the chance to share my own story and speak on alternative career pathways for medical graduates — a topic that’s close to my heart, especially for those who feel like their path doesn’t quite fit the traditional mold.

It was an honor to have Asad Ali Ahmed Cheema as the main speaker who highlighted the importance of Research and shed light on its benefits for medical professionals.

I am also grateful to my Co-host Dr. Ahmed Bilal , MD on his valuable input in today’s webinar.

Grateful for everyone who showed up, asked questions, and reminded me why we need more open conversations like this. Let’s keep the dialogue going!

People often ask me — WHY?

Why did you take a different route?

In 2023, right after graduation, I took an unexpected path. While most of my batchmates were busy working as House Officers in their home countries, I was serving as the Director of International Affairs at the International University of Kyrgyzstan–Tokmok Campus (now the University of South Asia–USA) for which I am extremely grateful to Allah and to the Administration of IUK and Educational Advisors. Being offered such a role at my age and experience was an opportunity of a lifetime.

As someone who had always been a top student, served as the President of the Student Council for multiple terms unopposed, led multiple community initiatives, graduated as one of the most decorated students in the university’s history, and dreamed of becoming a great doctor — something inside me shifted.

After all I had achieved and the potential I had discovered in myself, I realized I was meant for more. I loved medicine, and later enjoyed my house job too, but I knew I had the ability to do much more than just treat patients.

So, I took a bold step and carved out my own career path — one that allows me to use all my skills and passions to the fullest.

Reaching this point at my age taught me one thing: sometimes, all you need is a chance, and the courage to believe in yourself and in Allah’s plan for you.

Sharing this here as a reminder for anyone who feels different: it’s okay to take a path that doesn’t look like everyone else’s. At the end, it’s your determination and commitment that will define your journey.

This is so inspiring! As a doctor, I know how much does this mean for a medical student who has to constantly worry about the relevant expenses of medical school while also going through rigorous training and exams. I hope medical education or education overall can be made more accessible for all students.

Good news for those IMG doctors looking for opportunities in the US.

“The law, passed in 2023, created a limited license that allows doctors trained abroad to practice for two years under a supervising physician. They must either treat an underserved population or practice in an area of “unmet medical need.” After the two years, they’re given a provisional license for another two years, which allows them to mostly work independently, while still supervised. Then, they’re granted a full, unrestricted medical license.”

The state will likely be short 6,200 doctors by 2030. Meanwhile, over 12,000 state residents have an international medical degree they can’t use.
