On January 15, 1947, the body of 22-year-old Elizabeth Short was found in a vacant lot in Los Angeles.

What investigators found was unlike anything they had ever seen. The body had been surgically severed at the waist. Completely drained of blood. The face had been cut. And the body had been deliberately posed — as if the killer wanted it to be found exactly that way.

The press gave her a nickname that would last forever: the Black Dahlia.

Then he ordered the plane to take off — and somewhere over the Pacific Northwest, he opened the aft door and jumped into the night.

He was never found.
