On December 1st 1948, a well-dressed man was found dead on Somerton Beach in Adelaide, Australia. No identification was found on his body. No cause of death was established. Every label had been removed from every item of clothing he was wearing.

His fingerprints matched no record on file anywhere in the world.

Concealed inside a hidden pocket sewn into the lining of his trousers was a small torn piece of paper. Two words were printed on it. Tamam Shud — Persian for "it is ended." The paper was later matched to a page torn from a rare edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, a book not widely available in Australia at the time.

The book itself was found abandoned in a car parked nearby. Inside its back cover — a handwritten sequence of letters that has never been decoded. An unlisted phone number that connected investigators to a woman who denied knowing the dead man, but whose response, when shown his plaster cast, was noted by the interviewing officer as visibly distressed.

Investigators in 2021 exhumed the body and conducted DNA analysis. A partial profile was generated. It narrowed the search. It did not produce a name.

The Somerton Man has been studied by amateur investigators, professional cryptographers, and academic researchers for over seventy years. His identity has not been confirmed. His cause of death has not been established. The code has not been cracked.

In 1998, during Space Shuttle mission STS-88, NASA astronauts photographed an unidentified object in polar orbit above Earth. The object was dark, irregular in shape, and did not correspond to any satellite on record — American, Soviet, or otherwise.
