Federal hospitals in Islamabad have completed preparations to deal with any emergency situation, while Polyclinic has also been placed on high alert following PIMS.

According to the notification, heads of medical and non-medical departments have been directed to remain present at the hospital in case of an emergency, while leave for medical staff has been restricted.

Instructions have been issued to ensure the availability of additional staff in the emergency department, trauma centre, ICU, surgery department, blood bank and operating theatres.

The notification also called for ensuring the availability of the maximum possible number of beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, blood supplies and medicines at the hospital.
Director Emergency Dr Sharjeel has been appointed PIMS’ focal person in case of an emergency, while the transport department has been directed to ensure the availability of ambulances. The surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic and other relevant departments have also been instructed to assign additional staff duties.

Meanwhile, the Polyclinic administration has directed heads of all departments and doctors to remain available. Medical officers, trainee doctors, house officers and paramedical staff have also been ordered to remain in the city.

According to the administration, Dr Tanvir Malik will serve as Polyclinic’s focal person in an emergency, while necessary instructions have also been issued to the assistant executive directors.

Authorities in Rawalpindi have decided to close educational institutions, markets and transport terminals from September 21 to 27 as the city braces for multiple planned protest marches and sit-ins.

According to reports, all schools, colleges and universities in Rawalpindi will remain closed during the period. Hotels, motels, rest houses and inns will also be shut as part of security arrangements.

Transport and goods terminals will remain closed, while Metro Bus and Green Electric Bus services are also expected to remain suspended. Markets and wholesale markets across the city will also be closed, with authorities warning that business and commercial activity could remain disrupted throughout the week.

The measures come as several long marches have been announced for the twin cities between September 20 and 27. Jamaat-e-Islami’s march is scheduled to begin from Karachi on September 20, while other protest activity is expected later in the week, including a protest announced for September 27.

Security has also been intensified across Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Around 1,500 Safe City cameras in Rawalpindi have been activated, while drones will be used for surveillance. Containers fitted with spikes are being placed at key entry and exit points, including Faizabad, Chungi No. 26, Rawat, Chakri and Adiala Road.

Hospitals in the twin cities have been placed on emergency alert, with reports that leave for doctors, nurses and paramedical staff has been cancelled. Additional personnel from the Rangers and Punjab Constabulary have also been called in to assist with security arrangements.

The closures are expected to affect daily commuting, education and commercial activity across Rawalpindi as authorities prepare for a week of heightened security and possible road blockades.

The board of Control for cricket in India’s (BCCI) hopes of soon receiving the men’s and women’s Asia Cup trophies have faded.

According to sources cited by private TV channel Geo News, both Asia Cup trophies are in Pakistan and are not going anywhere.

Last year, the Indian men’s team did not receive the trophy from Asian Cricket Council President Mohsin Naqvi in Dubai, while the Indian women’s team also did not collect the trophy after winning last Sunday.

Both trophies remain with ACC President Mohsin Naqvi.

Sources said that both the men’s and women’s Asia Cup trophies are currently in Pakistan and will remain there.

Sources said India will have to agree to receive the trophies, and both trophies will be handed over only by ACC President Mohsin Naqvi.

A statement by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia had said that the two Asia Cup trophies would one day reach the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, but no timeline could be given for their return.

Reports have emerged that Aleema Khan, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, was detained outside her residence in Lahore ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) long march scheduled for 27 September. Imran Khan’s lawyer, Khalid Yousaf Chaudhry, confirmed in a brief statement issued on social media platform X that Aleema Khan had been arrested at her home.

Family sources said Aleema Khan was detained outside her residence on Upper Mall in Lahore as she was leaving home in her car with her driver.

Shortly after the incident, contact with her family members and lawyers was severed. Sources said her vehicle was initially taken to a local police station in Lahore. However, Aleema Khan was not present there, and reports emerged that she was immediately shifted from the police station to Kot Lakhpat Jail under a 3-MPO order, referring to an order issued over fears of a breach of peace.

Following Aleema Khan’s sudden arrest, strong reactions have been seen from PTI leaders and supporters.

In a statement issued by PTI, the party said that the “illegitimate government” and its “handlers occupying illegitimate power” had abducted Aleema Khan from outside her home.

Customs officials have seized 14 brand-new iPhone 18 Pro Max smartphones and two bottles of liquor from a passenger who arrived in Karachi from Hong Kong via Colombo, officials said.

According to a Customs spokesperson, the passenger became suspicious after noticing that he was being monitored and went into a public washroom.

He reportedly remained inside for around 20 minutes before returning. Customs officials subsequently searched him and recovered two bottles of liquor from his possession.

During further questioning, the passenger admitted that he was also carrying 14 new mobile phones.

Officials said the smartphones had been concealed underneath a toilet in the public washroom. The passenger allegedly planned to retrieve the devices and take them away after completing the customs clearance process.

The seized goods, including the smartphones and liquor, have an estimated combined value of around Rs5 million, according to the Customs spokesperson.

The officials said further proceedings would be carried out in accordance with the relevant customs laws and regulations.

The incident highlights the efforts of customs authorities to detect attempts to conceal undeclared goods and prevent their illegal movement through the country’s entry points.

Sindh has taken its first province-wide measure of the gender divide - and the numbers paint a picture of progress alongside some stubborn gaps, with millions of girls still out of school and women remaining heavily underrepresented in the police and judiciary.

The province's first-ever gender equality report, released by the provincial government on Friday, records gains in maternal health, women's employment and political participation, but flags persistent disparities in literacy, school enrolment, economic opportunities, digital access and representation in decision-making.

Unveiling the report, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed all provincial departments to undertake targeted reforms based on its findings, strengthen gender-sensitive governance and improve women's and girls' access to education, healthcare, employment and public representation. The report was presented at the Chief Minister House by CM's Special Assistant on Human Rights Rajveer Singh Sodho.

Describing the report as a new policy tool for the province, CM Shah said its findings would help the government identify areas where progress had been made and those requiring urgent intervention, while guiding evidence-based planning, resource allocation and institutional reforms.
