Zahhad was 23 years old when they decided to put their entire life on hold.

For three years, Zahhad and their partner Ziya Paval had been together in Kozhikode, Kerala, both already deep into their gender transitions — hormones, surgeries, years of work toward who they truly were. Zahhad had even had breast removal surgery already done.

But when they decided they wanted a child, Zahhad paused that journey and carried the pregnancy themselves.

On February 8, 2023, their baby arrived by C-section at a government hospital in Kozhikode — becoming India's first documented case of a transgender man giving birth.

The real fight started after: when registering the baby, they asked for something no form accounted for — recognition as who they actually are, not gendered labels that didn't fit.

The hospital didn't know what to do, so it went to the Kerala High Court — which ruled in their favor, letting them simply be listed as "parents."

Should official documents finally start making room for families like this?
