World Press Freedom Day Statement
On this World Press Freedom Day, we come together to recognize and reaffirm a fundamental truth: journalism is the cornerstone of democracy, and a free press is essential for a just, transparent, and informed society.
In every corner of the world, journalists take on the profound responsibility of seeking the truth, holding power to account, and giving voice to those who are often silenced. They report from war zones, investigate corruption, uncover injustices, and shine a light on stories that some would prefer remain hidden. Their work is not always easy — it is often dangerous, thankless, and met with resistance — yet they persist because the truth matters.
Today, we honor the courage of those who dare to speak truth to power, even when it comes at great personal cost. We remember the journalists who have been silenced by violence, censorship, imprisonment, and intimidation. Their sacrifices are not in vain — they inspire us to defend the freedom they fought for.
