Pakistan has made significant strides in the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Development Index for 2024, advancing to the 101st position. This marks a substantial improvement of 20 positions compared to its ranking in 2019. Over the past five years, Pakistan's overall score in the index has increased by 3.6%, now standing at 3.41 out of 7.
Categorized as a lower-middle-income economy and part of the Asia-Pacific regional group in the index, Pakistan's progress is part of a broader positive trend in the region. Ten out of the 19 economies in the group scored above the average, with 11 economies showing better scores since 2019.
The top-ranking countries in the index for 2024 include the United States, Spain, Japan, France, and Australia, renowned for their robust travel and tourism sectors.
Furthermore, the report highlighted the Middle East's remarkable recovery rates in international tourist arrivals, surpassing 2019 levels by 20%. Other regions like Europe, Africa, and the Americas also demonstrated strong recovery, with international tourist arrivals reaching around 90% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023.
Amir Jahangir, CEO of Mishal Pakistan, the Country Partner Institute of the World Economic Forum, attributed Pakistan's improved scores to the concerted efforts of various institutions in the country.
