Pakistan’s Meteorological Department (PMD) has announced that monsoon rains are expected to continue in most parts of the country on Thursday, July 17, 2025. In response, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has issued a flood warning for Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
According to a warning issued by the PMD, intermittent rain with strong winds and thunderstorms is expected at most places in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, northeastern Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan on Thursday, with isolated heavy falls anticipated. Additionally, some areas in central/southern Punjab and northeastern/southern Balochistan are also likely to experience rain with strong winds and thunderstorms.
The statement further warns that torrential rains pose a risk of flash flooding in local nullahs (seasonal streams) and rivers in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, the Pothohar region, northeastern Punjab, D.G. Khan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Murree, Galiyat, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Swabi, Nowshera, and Mardan.
The Met Department has also cautioned that heavy rains could lead to landslides, potentially disrupting traffic in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Furthermore, the warning states that low-lying areas in Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera, Peshawar, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi are at risk of urban flooding due to the intense rainfall.
Rescue Punjab reported that as of Wednesday, 33 people have died and 176 individuals have been injured in rain and storm-related incidents across the province. A spokesperson for Rescue Punjab stated that out of those who died, 13 were from Lahore, eight from Faisalabad, four from Pakpattan, three each from Sheikhupura and Okara, and one each from Nankana Sahib and Sahiwal.
In a separate development, the Met Department has issued an exceptionally high flood warning for the River Jhelum at Mangla. The warning also indicates a risk of flash flooding in the nullahs adjacent to the River Jhelum.
According to WASA, over 100 millimeters of rain have been recorded in Rawalpindi and Islamabad combined. WASA has declared a flood alert for the twin cities and instructed all relevant agencies to remain vigilant. MD WASA Saleem Ashraf stated that the water level in Leh Nullah is 16 feet at Katarian and 14 feet at Gwalmandi Bridge.
