Why do modern air forces spend billions on foreign jets when the real future of air combat is built on independence?
It is easy to get caught up in the hype surrounding future stealth fighters like the J-35 and KAAN, or to praise the advanced J-10C.
However, if we put those platforms aside, the true strength of our air defense relies on a home-grown hero: the JF-17 Thunder.
This fighter jet represents a long journey of local engineering pride. With the newest Block 3 version, this aircraft does not just compete with older Western models like the F-16, it completely outperforms them in modern electronic warfare.
The story of the JF-17 shows how a country can build a powerful defense system on its own terms.
Over twenty years, it changed from a basic, low-cost replacement plane into a highly advanced weapon system. By focusing on constant upgrades rather than starting from scratch, the program avoided the massive delays that usually ruin international fighter projects.
Today, the majority of the airframe is built directly at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex in Kamra. This local production gives full control over the software code, meaning the aircraft can be upgraded and fitted with new weapons without needing permission from any foreign government.
