Journalist Ansar Abbasi has triggered debate on social media after suggesting that separate gym timings should be introduced for men and women in Islamabad.

He said mixed gym environments could create “moral and social issues” and called for gender-based timings in line with Islamic values.

His statement received mixed reactions online, with many social media users saying that going to mixed or separate gyms should remain a personal choice.

Responding to the criticism, Ansar Abbasi defended his opinion and said his suggestion is based on Islamic teachings and constitutional values.

A Senate subcommittee meeting reviewed cases registered under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), where officials shared details of cases filed against citizens, journalists, and social media activists across Pakistan.

According to the data presented, a total of 689 PECA cases have been registered nationwide. Lahore and Multan recorded 129 cases each, Faisalabad 127, and Rawalpindi 72 cases. Smaller numbers were reported from Islamabad, Quetta, and Gilgit.

Officials also informed the committee that 41 cases have been filed against journalists, media workers, and social media activists. Out of these, nine cases were registered in Islamabad, two in Rawalpindi, and one in Karachi.

During the meeting, officials said provincial police no longer have authority to register PECA FIRs, as powers have now been transferred from the FIA to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Authority (NCCIA).

The committee was further informed that Punjab and Sindh are working on setting up separate cybersecurity departments to deal with cybercrime cases more effectively.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged Pakistan to gradually phase out petroleum and electricity subsidies during ongoing consultations for the 2026–27 federal budget.

In initial virtual discussions with the Ministry of Finance, the IMF emphasized the need for immediate implementation of regulator-approved tariff adjustments and further reductions in energy sector subsidies.

The IMF also recommended expanding the tax base, increasing the tax-to-GDP ratio by at least 1%, and reducing tax exemptions alongside non-development expenditures.

Officials confirmed that discussions are still underway, while final fiscal targets and policy measures have yet to be finalized.

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has launched a major operation against illegal housing societies in Islamabad’s Zone 4, sealing multiple offices involved in administration, sales, and marketing activities.

Authorities took action against several unapproved projects, including Shaheen Town Islamabad on Lehtrar Road and Islamabad Green Paradise, over violations related to unauthorized plot sales and development without mandatory approvals.

According to officials, the operation was carried out under the CDA Ordinance 1960 and ICT Zoning Regulations. The CDA has also directed departments to stop electricity and gas connections for illegal schemes, while a strict ban has been imposed on the sale and purchase of plots and residential units within such projects.

Citizens have once again been advised to verify a housing society’s CDA-approved NOC before making any investment to avoid property fraud. The authority also urged media platforms not to advertise unapproved housing projects.

The US has announced a temporary pause in naval es**rt operations through the Strait of Hormuz, citing ongoing diplomatic efforts and signs of progress toward de-escalation with Iran.

The decision comes after weeks of regional tensions that disrupted global oil supply routes and impacted energy markets worldwide. US officials say key military objectives have been met for now, though the situation remains sensitive.

Following the announcement, global oil prices dropped below $100 per barrel as markets reacted to hopes of reduced tensions. Iran has not yet issued an official response, while uncertainty continues around the fragile ceasefire and regional stability.

The Ruet-e-Hilal Research Council has predicted that Eid-ul-Adha 2026 is likely to fall on Wednesday, May 27, in Pakistan. According to the council's astronomical calculations, the Zil Hajj moon is expected to be born on May 16, with the month of Zil Hajj beginning on May 18. This would place the Day of Arafah on May 26 and the first day of Eid on May 27. While these scientific predictions help families and businesses plan ahead for the "Festival of Sacrifice," the official announcement will still be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after the physical sighting of the crescent moon.
