Today, we remember the victims of Pakistan International Airlines Flight 8303.
On May 22, 2020, the domestic flight from Lahore to Karachi tragically crashed into the residential neighborhood of Model Colony while attempting an emergency landing at Jinnah
International Airport.

An unstable approach led to a severe belly landing that fatally damaged both engines. Despite the crew's attempts to go around and make it back to the runway, the Airbus A320 lost airspeed and went down just short of safety. The disaster claimed the lives of 97 people on board, along with one resident on the ground. Two passengers miraculously survived.
The tragedy exposed deep systemic failures. In the weeks that followed, a government investigation revealed a massive scandal: nearly a third of all active pilot licenses in Pakistan were dubious or fake.

In response to the safety crisis, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the UK Civil Aviation Authority slapped a blanket ban on PIA flights-restrictions that cut off the airline from European and British skies for years.

The tragedy exposed massive corruption within Pakistan's aviation sector. A subsequent government probe revealed that nearly a third of all active pilots in Pakistan held dubious credentials. This put the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) directly under fire, drawing heavy international skepticism over its corrupt testing and licensing practices.

Why the long wait? Operations were paused in 2012 due to diplomatic tensions and security concerns, forcing travelers to take long detours through the Middle East for over a decade.

The silence ended in January 2026, with Biman Bangladesh officially restoring the connection. Here’s to shorter journeys, easier reunions, and a new chapter for both nations! ☁️✨
