Sindh Taras Agreement: A Historic Milestone
سندھ طاس معاہدہ: ایک تاریخی سنگ میل
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 between Pakistan and India, was a landmark agreement to regulate the distribution of water from the Indus River and its tributaries. Its main purpose was to address water-sharing issues between the two nations and prevent conflicts over this vital resource.
The agreement was finalized on September 19, 1960, in Karachi under the mediation of the World Bank. The signatories were the then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan's President Ayub Khan.
Key Provisions of the Treaty:
1. The waters of the eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) were allocated to India.
2. The waters of the western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab) were allocated to Pakistan.
3. India was permitted limited use of the western rivers for specific purposes, such as power generation and agriculture, but it could not block the flow of these rivers.
4. Any disputes related to water use would be resolved through international arbitration.
