Did You Know?
The U.S. Once Fought a War Over a Pig
In 1859, a simple farm animal nearly sparked a full-scale war between the United States and Great Britain.
On San Juan Island, a British-owned pig wandered onto an American settler’s land and started eating his potatoes. The frustrated farmer shot the pig, not realizing that this small act would ignite an international crisis.
British officials demanded justice. American settlers refused to back down. Soon, U.S. Army troops and British Royal Marines faced each other with loaded weapons, ready for battle—all because of one pig.
Remarkably, no humans were killed during the conflict. The only casualty of the so-called Pig War was the pig itself. After years of tense standoffs, diplomacy finally resolved the border dispute, and the island was peacefully awarded to the United States.
A strange but true reminder that history isn’t always shaped by grand battles—sometimes, it starts with a pig and a potato field.
