This historic family home sits in the midst of Karachi’s teeming city centre. Driving past Karachi Zoo and navigating streets thronged with traffic, we turn into a quiet lane which ends in a cul de sac. In stark contrast to the fumes, clamour and jumble of shops and high-rises just steps away, this narrow street is graced by a row of stately old houses built in the colonial vernacular style. White-washed gizri stone facades and tiled gabled roofs are surrounded by generous lawns and gracious old trees. These beautiful structures were built in the early 1900s and they are still occupied by descendants of the original inhabitants all hailing from the same family.

My favourite space would be the small breakfast room upstairs. It opens into a small balcony and it’s lovely to sit here when it rains. Or just to have tea here. When we entertain I put the dessert out in this area.

It’s not easy to restore an old building. The house next door to this one was being torn down and we acquired those doors and windows for my house. The old balconies were repaired and some were added on, the spiral staircase was retrieved from an old house in Hyderabad that was torn down… to list a few things.

The old city centres of Karachi still retain fragments of past glories. Gutted, (as in the case of the old Victoria Furniture building) and precarious as they may be. Tucked between generic modern structures or defaced by garish signboards. The city boasts some fine examples of colonial vernacular architecture and we never tire of searching them out and digging for the stories they hold.

The ancient monastery of Takht Bahi in Mardan is absolutely awe inspiring. The monastery sits atop a hill which commands a sweeping view of the surrounding area. Our guide led us through the various courtyards, each with an imposing central stupa surrounded by alcoves which once housed statues of the Buddha. Frescoes depicting scenes from his life would have decorated the walls of the stupa. All the surving sculptures and stupas are now housed safely in the Peshawar museum.
