The World Bank has revised international poverty lines for Pakistan in its June 2025 Global Poverty Update to reflect changes in global price levels and new purchasing power parity (PPP) data.

The poverty line for lower-middle-income countries like Pakistan is now set at $4.20 per person per day, impacting 44.7% of the population. The extreme poverty threshold has shifted to $3.00/day, affecting 16.5%, a sharp rise from 4.9% under the previous $2.15 benchmark.

Additionally, the upper-middle-income poverty line of $8.30/day now includes 88.4% of Pakistan’s population. The figures are based on 2021 PPP data from the International Comparison Program and allow for consistent cross-country comparisons.

According to the World Bank, this shift does not signal a decline in living standards but reflects updated thresholds and improved global data. The national poverty line and underlying HIES 2018/19 data remain unchanged for domestic policymaking.
