🧠 The Psychology of FMCG Buying.
What really makes a consumer choose one brand over another?
In FMCG, consumers don't always buy the product with the best features.
They often choose the product that feels right for their needs, their budget, and the occasion.
At the shelf, six forces can influence the decision:
1️⃣ Need & Occasion
What does the consumer need—and when?
2️⃣ Price & Value
Is the product affordable, and does it feel worth the price?
3️⃣ Availability
If the product isn't available at the right outlet, at the right time, there is no sale.
4️⃣ Brand & Trust
Familiarity, consistency and reputation reduce the perceived risk of trying a brand.
5️⃣ Visibility & Packaging
Before a consumer buys a product, they first have to notice it.
6️⃣ Social & Emotional Influence
Family, recommendations, habits, taste and emotions can all shape the final choice.
And this is where Sales + Marketing + Consumer Understanding comes together.
A strong FMCG strategy doesn't start with:
“How can we sell more?”
It starts with:
“Why does the consumer buy?”
Because when you understand the WHY behind the purchase, you can make better decisions about Product, Price, Distribution, Visibility and Communication.
Understand the Consumer → Win the Shelf → Earn the Repeat Purchase.
💬 From your FMCG experience, which factor has the greatest influence on purchase decisions: Price, Availability, Brand, Visibility, Taste/Quality, or Recommendation?
