Karachi (15 July 2026): The Sindh Commission for the Protection of Journalists was informed in its meeting held today that the heirs of journalist Nasrullah Gadani, who was murdered in Mirpur Mathelo in May 2024, along with their legal counsel, have submitted an application, wherein they expressed serious security concerns, stating that during court proceedings in Mirpur Mathelo, an atmosphere of fear and intimidation is being deliberately created through various means to harass both the family and their lawyer. As a result, it has become increasingly difficult to pursue the case in Mirpur Mathelo. They have therefore requested that the case be transferred outside Sukkur Division, preferably to Hyderabad or Karachi.
The members of the Commission expressed grave concern over the matter and decided to act upon the request of the family by writing to the Home Department for the transfer of the case.
Regarding amendments to the Commission’s Act, the meeting was informed that the draft amendments, including proposed clauses, have been reviewed by the Law, Home, and Services Departments, as well as the Chief Secretary Sindh. These departments have suggested that the Information Department re-examine the draft. In response, the Commission constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the Secretary Information to resolve the matter amicably and finalize the proposed amendments. The committee will include the Secretary Law, Secretary Home, Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan, Mazhar Abbas, and Maqsood Yousfi.
Furthermore, Chairman Aijaz Ahmed Memon apprised the meeting that Muhammad Peerel Mallah, a reporter of Hilal Pakistan (Thatta), had presented details of his case during the Executive Committee meeting held on 2 July. The Executive Committee had decided to ensure a transparent investigation into the matter, and accordingly, a letter has been sent to the Home Department requesting a judicial inquiry. A representative of the Home Department informed the meeting that necessary action is currently underway.
The Commission also thoroughly reviewed all reports related to the case of journalist Tufail Rind from Mirpur Mathelo and decided to invite the editor of the newspaper for which he worked to provide further briefing on the matter.
It was further decided that the Commission’s performance and activities will be effectively disseminated to the public through the publication of its annual reports in book form. In this regard, a Publication Committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan, with Mazhar Abbas and Saeed Memon as members.
The meeting of the Commission was held at Sindh Archives under the chairmanship of Mr. Aijaz Ahmed Memon. Participants included Additional Secretary Human Rights Ali Gul Sanjrani, Special Secretary Law Asadullah Bhatti, Deputy Secretary Home Department Fateh Ali Rahmoon, Mazhar Abbas representing the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan representing the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Maqsood Yousfi from the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors, Director Information Muhammad Imran Zunoon representing the Secretary Information, and Secretary of the Commission Saeed Memon.
