The Great Wall of China is not a single wall built at one time. It is a vast system of fortifications constructed, connected, rebuilt and expanded by different Chinese dynasties over many centuries. Its history reaches back to early defensive walls built before the Qin Dynasty. Around 220 BC, Qin Shi Huang connected sections of earlier fortifications into a larger defensive system. Later dynasties continued to expand and rebuild it, with much of the famous brick-and-stone wall seen today dating from the Ming Dynasty between 1368 and 1644.
The main purpose was to defend and monitor China's northern frontier. The Great Wall included walls, watchtowers, passes, fortresses and military routes, adapting to different landscapes and changing military needs. UNESCO describes it as an extraordinary example of military architecture and one of China's most important historical and cultural symbols.
