Analyst Samiullah Tariq blamed SBP's decision to increase the interest rate as a key factor for the drop in the KSE-100 index.

"The market wasn't expecting a rate hike. That's why it is reacting," the headof research at the Pakistan- Kuwait Investment Company told The News.

At the time the decision was announced the markets had closed, which is why the KSE-100 index went in the red at opening bell today. SBP hikes interest rate to

16% to curtail inflation

On Friday, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the SBP raised the keypolicy rateby 100 basis points to 16% the highest since 1999.

The central bank, in a statement, issued after the meeting said that the decision reflects the MPC's view that inflationary pressures have proven to be stronger and more persistent than expected.

"This decision is aimed at ensuring that elevated inflation does not become entrenched and that risks to financial stability are contained, thus paving the way for higher growth on a more sustainable basis," the MPC said.ongoing economic slowdown, inflation is increasingly being driven by persistent global and domestic supply shocks that are raising costs.

ISLAMABAD - Former interior minister Sheikh Rashid shared an aerial clip of a massive traffic jam, however, it was revealed that the video is actually from a huge traffic jam captured during the Thanksgiving getaway in southern California.Rashid, a key ally of Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-i- Insaf, shared the clip on Twitter, days after the much- anticipated power show in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

Netizens were quick to spot that the Awami Muslim League leader had reposted a Los Angeles traffic jam clip.

Social media users debunked PTI leaders claim who mentioned that millions of activists flocked to Rawalpindi's Murree Road to listen to the address of ousted Pakistani premier Imran Khan.

Trolls and PTI critics alsoshared international media articles on Los Angeles' traffic jams that reportedly occurred five years back.

Rashid's snafu is another example that nothing can be kept a secret from social media users in this day and age. Keyboard warriors also made memes out of Rashid posts, calling him out for reposting the L.A clip.

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan on Sunday expressed grave concern over confirmation of BJP leadership's direct involvement in anti-Muslim violence during the horrific Gujarat riots of 2002 that led to killing of over two thousand Muslims.Pakistan also urged India to immediately constitute an independent commission of inquiry to bring the culprits of the horrific Godhra incident, as well as the Gujarat riots, to justice.

In a statement on Friday, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah said that as chief minister of Gujarat in 2002, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taught a lesson to "anti-social elements".

Pakistan's Foreign Office (FO) said Shah's remarks as well as those of former Gujarat chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela corroborated and confirmed "Pakistan's long-standing

rtion that

the

R ID Indgovernment under the incumbent prime minister - was directly responsible for fomenting violence and massacre of Muslims."

"It is most deplorable that the crimes against humanity, targeting Muslims, were perpetrated solely for BJP's political gains.

"Regrettably, the BJP once again seeks to cash in on its divisive policies two decades after the Gujarat tragedy," the press release of FO reads.

The FO mentioned that the current Indian government's treatment of minorities, particularly Muslims, was "discriminatory, degrading and full of hate and violence".It further noted that the Indian Supreme Court "handed a clean chit" to Modi this year for his role in the Gujarat riots and shut down as many as 11 petitions, including one filed by the National Human Rights Commission of India, seeking an independent probe into the riots.

"It is an undeniable fact that India's incumbent prime minister had been banned from entering countries such as the United States till 2014, because of his abysmal human rights record as chief minister of the Gujarat state.

"Sadly, the entire Indian legal and administrative machinery is blindly pursuing the Hindutva- driven agenda of the ruling BJP-RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) nexus, where perpetrators of hate and violence are protected by law and enjoy the exalted status, whereas religious minorities are constantly threatened and denied the freedom to practice their faith without fear, while their lives, property, and places of worship remain under threat of violation," the FO remarked.

It added that India must independent inquiry commission to bring the culprits of the Godhra and Gujarat riots to justice.

The FO also called on the Indian government to ensure that minority rights in the country were safeguarded and their lives protected.

"Pakistan also calls upon the international community, particularly human rights activists and defenders, to take serious note of the aggravating situation of Islamophobia in India," the FO added.
