A viral claim on social media says that scientist Heinz von Foerster mathematically predicted the exact date the world would end: Friday, 13 November 2026.

In 1960, physicist Heinz von Foerster and his colleagues published a real scientific paper in the journal Science titled Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, A.D. 2026

Using population growth equations, they showed that if the world population kept increasing at the same rapid rate forever, the mathematical model would reach a singularity around that date. They never claimed the Earth would explode, humanity would suddenly disappear, or the world would literally end in 2026. Their paper was actually a warning about uncontrolled population growth, environmental pressure, limited resources, and human self-destruction caused by imbalance.

Interestingly, the chosen date also matched Heinz von Foerster’s birthday showing that the title had a symbolic and humorous touch too. Today, population growth has slowed compared to 1960 predictions, so the original model no longer fits modern data exactly. So,
the paper was real science but the end of the world in 2026 headline is misleading sensationalism.
