🩺 Types of Insulin (English)

1. Rapid-acting insulin

Onset: 10 to 30 minutes

Peak: 30 to 90 minutes

Duration: 3 to 5 hours

Use: Taken just before meals to control blood sugar after eating.

Examples: Insulin Lispro (Humalog), Insulin Aspart (NovoRapid), Insulin Glulisine (Apidra)

2. Short-acting insulin

Onset: 30 to 60 minutes

Peak: 2 to 4 hours

Duration: 5 to 8 hours

Use: Taken 30 minutes before meals.

Examples: Regular insulin (Actrapid, Humulin R)

3. Intermediate-acting insulin

Onset: 1 to 2 hours

Peak: 4 to 12 hours

Duration: 12 to 18 hours

Use: Covers insulin needs for half a day or overnight.

Examples: NPH insulin (Insulatard)

4. Long-acting insulin

Onset: 1 to 2 hours

Peak: Minimal or no peak

Duration: Around 24 hours

Use: Taken once daily to provide steady insulin levels (basal insulin).

Examples: Insulin Glargine (Lantus), Insulin Detemir (Levemir)

5. Ultra-long-acting insulin

Onset: 1 to 2 hours

Peak: No peak

Duration: Up to 42 hours

Use: Provides very stable and long coverage.

Example: Insulin Degludec (Tresiba)

6. Premixed insulin

Use: Combination of short-acting and intermediate-acting insulin for easier dosing.

Examples: Novomix 30, Humalog Mix 25, Humulin 70/30
