In response to the increased threat posed by the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) "Birparjoy," Section 144 has been imposed in Karachi, as stated in a notification issued by the Karachi Commissioner. This measure includes a ban on entry to beaches in the city. The administration has also prohibited fishing, sailing, swimming, and bathing in the seas within Karachi's territorial limits from June 11 until the storm subsides. The decision was made to prevent any potential incidents of shipwreck or drowning.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued warnings to all relevant authorities, advising them to remain alert throughout the forecast period. The cyclone, located in the east-central Arabian Sea, has maintained its intensity and has been tracking northeastward. It currently lies at Latitude 15.5°N and Longitude 66.3°E, approximately 1,040 kilometers south of Karachi, 1,020 kilometers south of Thatta, and 1,110 kilometers southeast of Ormara, according to the Met Office.
Violations of the imposed orders will be dealt with by the respective deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners, in coordination with the relevant senior superintendent of police in the city. Those found in violation may face charges under section 188 PPC.
The PMD reports maximum sustained surface winds of 120 to 130 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 150 kilometers per hour near the center of the system. Favorable environmental conditions, including sea surface temperatures of 30°C to 32°C, low vertical wind shear, and upper-level divergence, continue to support the intensification of the storm.
