Workshop at UHS guides nursing students on selecting evidence-based research topics
Lahore, October 13: The University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore organized a one-day workshop on “Selecting Evidence-Based Research Topic in Nursing” on Monday to train postgraduate nursing students in identifying and developing researchable topics relevant to clinical practice.
The workshop, held at Prof. Tania Shakoori Hall, UHS City Campus, was organized by the university’s Research and Development Center. Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore, Vice Chancellor UHS, and Prof. Nadia Naseem, Pro Vice Chancellor, were also present.
Speaking at the concluding session, Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore said that nursing, being a clinical discipline, must emphasize research that addresses real community needs. He said mandatory research workshops would be introduced in the first six months of the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program to strengthen students’ research orientation.
He urged participants to be careful in reviewing literature and to focus on practical, patient-centered problems. “A nurse is the real caretaker of the patient,” he said, adding that nurses bear a greater responsibility toward ensuring safe and compassionate care. “Our foremost priority is to produce the best practical nurses who can also educate attendants as auxiliary caregivers,” he added.
The workshop aimed to help MSN students identify, evaluate, and finalize feasible research topics in nursing. Participants were trained to understand what makes a strong research question, identify literature gaps, formulate problem statements, and refine topics using databases.
The facilitators included Prof. Ayesha Humayun, Principal Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan Medical and Dental College; Prof. Sidrah Saleem, Director Research, UHS; Prof. Samina Kousar, Head, Institute of Nursing, UHS; Prof. Uruj Zehra, Head of Anatomy Department, UHS; and Ms. Rehana Ilahi, Chief Nursing Officer, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre.
A large number of nursing students and faculty members attended the workshop.
